Football starts again!

September 7th, 2008

Football season has begun and with it so has Fantasy Football. I got really lucky this year and drafted ninth (out of ten and yes its sarcasm). It’s not the first time I have had a poor draft position. Seemingly I get stuck there more often then not. There must be something wrong with our league, since the same person has gotten LT three years in a row and its not me!

Here is my team:

    Starters

  • Peyton Manning (QB)
  • Reggie Wayne (WR)
  • Santana Moss (WR)
  • Brandon Jacobs (RB)
  • Antonio Gates (TE)
  • Patrick Crayton (WR)
  • Edgerrin James (RB)
  • David Akers (K)
  • Patrick Willis (DL)
  • New England (Team Defense)
    Backups

  • Javon Walker (WR)
  • Bernard Berrian (WR)
  • Chester Taylor (RB)
  • Vince Young (QB)
  • Greg Olsen (TE)
  • Ellis Hobbs (DB)

Wish me luck, especially since Payton Manning is fresh off of knee surgery. We will see how he holds up.

Also the defensive players numbers got changed a bit from last year. Hopefully the tweaks will make that position more viable. Come on Patrick Willis! Get those twenty solo tackles a game!!

ps. After todays (sunday) last game (poor Colts!) all my players have gone and my team has racked up 84.20 points, which puts me a firm twenty points ahead of my opponent - who still has possible points from tomorrows game.

Demo Reviews: Geometry Wars 2 and Braid Game (xBox Live)

August 30th, 2008

Both of these are demo reviews. Wanting to indicate that within the review I used a new special mushroom type. Seems that I will use any excuse to come up with new mushroom type. =)

I really didn’t feel good about doing a whole review on either. Even though I fully utilized the playtime of each demo, I was limited by what sections of the games were available. Its doubtful I made it past an hour play on either.

Each game was looked at more in regards to whether the demo would encourage purchasing the full version or not.

That being said, I have not purchased the full version of either game. Why? Well you will have to read the reviews to find out.

It did occur to me while writing the reviews, that maybe I should purchase these games, just so I can support the small developers, the underdogs, and the innovators. The game industry needs more Geometry Wars and Braids out there pushing the boundaries, helping everyone redefine what is profitable and worthwhile.

Dollar voting, it’s what businesses understand.

Wii Fit by Random Access Babble

August 28th, 2008

A good friend of mine recently wrote a review of Wii Fit on her blog. She manages to convey good information as well as hilarious insight. Clearly she is brilliant!

I love reading her blog, but since this particular post has a bit more relevance with the topics I usually post about, I though I would give it a direct link.

Give it a read!

World of Warcraft; My Rebound MMO

August 8th, 2008

EverQuest was my first love. Oh I dabbled before that and spent time with the likes of Ulitma Online, Meridian 59, and various MUDs, but EQ was my first drop down drag out devoted commitment.

It was far from love at first site. In fact the first time met we could barley understand each other. It was in beta and I was clueless. My first character ran around town for five minutes, pressed “a” before hitting enter and was promptly killed by an NPC.
I was pretty sure that was a horrible way to make friends and logged off.

But EQ was young and at the urging of mutual friends I gave it another chance. They helped me understand the language of EverQuest, offering us a much smoother introduction. All that hand holding my friends did paid off. We got along famously.

Ticket to Ride

August 3rd, 2008

In honor of the latest board game to grace the xBox Live site I thought I would review it and the game it is descendent from.

Okay so it’s a different version, but honestly it doesn’t make that much of a difference. The xBox live version is exactly like the board game.

Dungeon Siege Movie Review

July 23rd, 2008

It’s amazing how much the game industry has ceded control of their IP to various non-game people. I’m sure this movie could have been better had there been more interest in protecting the Dungeon Siege Intellectual Property.

Hopefully soon the industry will catch on. The comic book companies certainly have, but then they have had more time to wise up.

So here is the review:

It boggles the mind…

July 23rd, 2008

So supposedly Nintendo no longer cares about us core gamers. (Yes I’m a core gamer, sheesh!)

Well all is not as it seems. Lets delve further into the murky system of game news.
Remember that game telephone, where one person wispers something to another and it goes around until the last person comes up with a completely garbled version of the original sentence? It seems to me that the gaming news on the internet has become a distorted version of this game. Let me demonstrate.

Here is my path, very short mind you.

VG Cats -> joystick -> MSNBC

I started out at VG Cats and ended up at MSNBC only using direct links inside the articles. The above links are to the articles I am referring too.

VG Cats Quote:

“Guess who doesn’t see us as a market anymore. Yep. Animal Crossing? That’s it?… Really? The thing is… They did something with Wii that no other console has been able to do. Bring in the mainstream in droves. Now that’s making more money than they ever did with just us. So we’ve just stopped being a priority.”
(in there was a link to the joystick article and the comic about the subject which is quite funny, its #257:Waiting, go check it out!)

Here is the Quote from Joystick:

“That niggling feeling in the back of your head that Nintendo wasn’t talking to you with their E3 press conference? Good news: It wasn’t your imagination! Straight from the mouth of Shigeru Miyamoto, the company says that they’re not using E3 to speak to the core gamer anymore. Yeah, thanks Shiggy, we pieced it together.”

And ultimately the original article on MSNBC (its pretty good and worth a read if you have the time):

“The first that I’d want to clarify is that the concept that Wii intentionally does not cater to core gamers is probably a misconception, and perhaps one that’s almost a PR tactic used by some of the other companies to paint us as a company that’s not targeting core gamers. But in fact, while we may not be focusing on the high-end graphics and technology that core gamers would typically be drawn to, the types of games we create, and continue to create, are certainly games that people who play games would certainly want to continue playing.

I think that there’s probably one other element to it, and that’s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.”

So as you can see it only takes two steps to conclude that although Shigeru Miyamoto is directly quoted saying they are still putting out material that is appealing the core gamer, he really hates us and no longer wants to make anything besides brain games and new Wii fitness versions (okay maybe four since I’m sort of exaggerating there, yaay I get to be a step as well!) =D

The thing that really is amusing is that all these articles are linked to each other. Way to read what you linked to people!

Dr. Horrible

July 22nd, 2008

Late on sunday I remembered that we still hadn’t watched Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. Even after making a huge post about it and everything. We still managed to squeak in the entire thing before it got yanked off the web Sunday at midnight.

I’m not even going to make a seperate review post for this. I only need one word and five mushrooms.

AWESOME!

Geometry Wars Retro Evolved Review

June 28th, 2008

The game came bundled with my new memory stick. Our xBox started freezing so I wanted to store my profile on the memory stick instead of the hard drive. (Must save my 350 achievement points!!)

I think I played a demo version of this game at one point. Anyway it was interesting enough for me to actually want to give it a shot, plus its pretty. ^_^

Geometry Wars Retro Evolved Review

Everyone starts off with a peashooter as a beginning weapon. It’s almost impossible to aim, especially as a new player (behold my lack of skills).

It seems backwards to me that the game starts you off with the most difficult weapon. Every weapon after that is far more useful and seems to shoot out ten times as many projectiles.

Why not start with one of those end weapons and then as you progress and are able to hone your skills the weapons give you less support? Now that would be a true challenge. Defeat the hard levels with the peashooter.

Enjoy!
