Day 54 – Finish a game or not?

In general my tolerance for crappy games is rather low. The notion that I have to play a game for twenty plus hours before the fun part begins is quite intolerable. There has to be something redeeming or fun about the experience for me to continue.

I also prefer for the game to not be excessively difficult. Dying repeatedly in the first five minutes is not fun. Or making the game so complicated that it requires hours of studying before being able to play the game effectively is also not fun.

It really comes down to the fact that I have a limited amount of time to play games; I do not want to waste it on games that aren’t fun.

But I will say that writing reviews has definitely extended my patience and encouraged me to play games far past my usual point of abandonment.

Even so I rarely finish games that I don’t love, especially games that are really long. It is far easier to simply move onto a new game, because if it isn’t a game I really like, I have no incentive to play all the way to the end.

It isn’t so much whether I finish or not, it’s whether I fill in achievements or not. Borderlands is giving me a bit of trouble though. I may not finish it. :p

Is that because in your mind finishing the story line no longer constitutes finishing the game? And that completion of all the achievements now is the real game completed designation?

  3. Deveryn Says:

Finishing the story will always mean finishing the game. I just meant there usually isn’t a question of whether or not I’ll finish. It’s a question of whether or not I’ll try to fill in the extra bit of work.

Ah! As someone who doesn’t always finish the storyline, I’m quite impressed. That is certainly much more dedication then I have.
So what do you do when you dont like a game?

  5. Deveryn Says:

I usually just get rid of it. Sometimes, I’ll put it aside to maybe try again later. (I usually don’t get back to such a game.) I try to avoid any of that by being really picky and avoiding a lot of games when they come out, though some are hard to pass up.

I almost never finish any game. A bad one I won’t even think about wasting my time on.

  7. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

I’m not always able to distinguish good from bad before I have played it. But even so I am not that attached to finishing.

Maybe thats why I dont mind endless games like WoW and EQ as much. I dont need an end goal to enjoy the experience.

The only game I ever finished was EverQuest. I beat the shit out of that game.

Seriously, I’ve played a few through all the way. Mass Effect, Zelda, but there has to be a compelling reason to do so. A lot of RPGs in particular, once you hit “critical mass” of power, battles become so easy that even a good story line won’t do it for me. There still has to be some dangling carrots.

  9. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

Wait, you finished EQ? Reeeeeaaaaaalllly? Was there an IWiN button that I missed seeing?

  10. Myrmidian Says:

I usually finish games. But I’m pretty good about not starting games that might be duds. It takes quite a bit of suggestion from the right people to get a game on my list.

The “I WIN” button was labeled “DELETE THIS CHARACTER”. I pressed the SHIT out of that thing.
