Sunday Gundam

It feels like I have been trying forever to get my husband to watch anime. Having very little success, I wrote the whole thing off as a lost cause. Then just the other day the husband came home with a Gundam model kit from the hobby store. A rather surprising purchase to say the least.

When asked what prompted this purchase, he told me that he really enjoyed building Lego mechs and this seemed like an interesting new challenge. I was totally floored, because I LOVE Gundam. Whats not to love about Giant robots, come ON!

Of course I found an excuse to get back to that store as soon as humanly possible, so I could get myself a kit. The unicorn one. Oh yeah!

Which is what we did today. Side by side Gundam building. Hubby is working on the Freedom Gundam model and mine is the Master Gundam & Fuunsaiki model.

But the real win here is that he said he will watch Mobile Suit Gundam with me. Thus proving that Lego is a gateway drug for anime. Pure logic there. =)

Lots of photos of my first ever Gundam model building to follow, but first, here is how far I have gotten.

The instructions might be in Japanese, but they are fairly easy to follow. See all the fancy tools? Yeah those are my husbands Warhammer set. Perfect for this! Head and torso done here.

Head, torso, and arms done and attached. Plus if you look closely you can see some of the instructions.

Poor guy all in pieces. Feet and knee caps done. This is also a good view of the sheets of pieces. Each piece has to be carefully cut out, one at a time. Rather time consuming process.

It was actually quite entertaining to see the building progression. Since this is my first one, I had no idea what I was building or even what size this would end up being.

Legs and upper body. Hips next.

It stands!! At this point I was sure it was all done. Had totally forgotten about the wings. =P

With wings and they articulate. In fact quite a bit of the model articulates. Its really impressive.

Turns out he still isn’t done. Well that’s not quite true. He has his wing armor and various different hands and spells, but what I really want to work on next is the Unicorn! Accoutrements can wait.

This was so much fun. I might just have to start building an army of Gundam Robots.

yay for giant robots! My hubby used to build more model robots but then he got into warmachine and then he stopped. But I still have them over my desk! Mostly Patlabor and Gundam although mostly I bought him the ones that “looked cool” so I didn’t pay attention to series. I like model building okay but cutting out those tiny bits bored me to tears. I prefer my action figures already assembled. :)

It *is* pretty cool how articulated most models are, considering they were just glued together.

    YES GIANT ROBOTS!!

I actually really enjoyed cutting out each section and piecing them all together. It was a rather zen experience.

Plus I created something!! It LIVES!!!! =D
