Uncharted 2 Review (PS3)

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Meet Nathan Drake, fortune hunter, grave robber (with a heart), rock climber, gunslinger, truck wrangler, and part time archeologist. Sounds great right? Yeah well turns out he is also an idiot, albeit an exceedingly competent idiot.

His physical capabilities are incredible. The man can scale icy cliffs, shoot almost any type of weapon, fling himself from one moving vehicle to the next, all while hardly breaking a sweat, but he is clearly lacking the common sense gene (aka dumb as a brick.)

Heavy Rain Review (PS3)

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Everything I have read about Heavy Rain leads me to the same conclusion – this game is a critic’s wet dream. “Exhausting, exhilarating, and, crucially, involving” (PS Magazine). “Powerful and emotionally engaging narrative” (GameSpot). You get the point. It manages to push all the right “critic” buttons: innovative, graphics driven, and story rich.

The game reminds of me of all those sad depressing artsy movies about special people that somehow manage to win the Oscars time and time again. Those movies that are lauded for their craft, composition, and story; those movies that suck all the fun out of life and that I avoid at all costs.

Resident Evil 5 Review (PS3)

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Now a days I tend to avoid scary games. Yet there was indeed a time when I enjoyed them; enjoy may be the wrong description, it was much more: cringed my way through the experience. Yet clearly some part of it was exciting enough to be entertaining.

Resident Evil (the original) was probably the first horror game I played on the console and boy did it scare the shit out of me. The spooky atmosphere in that vast ancient house, monsters dropping on top of you when you least expect it, and every nerve racking moment when nothing happens but you just can’t help expecting something to jump out at you anyway. Plus I got to kick ass playing a girl, which is always a big plus in my book.

Rock Band 2 Review (PS3)

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Sit up Music industry and listen, for your future has just been redefined, again. Interactive music is by far the most interesting and innovative direction music has taken since the record player. This it the time to get involved, help not hinder. Your industry needs this boost of fresh energy that this venue is providing. If handled in an intelligent manner it could be quite a boon.

Rock Band developers meet iTunes. This is a match made in heaven and would blow the socks off of everyone on the planet. Please make it happen.

Another thing, could you please have more song expansions that focus on different genres? I have so many friends that would kill for a best of 80s or best of 90s. Throw us ladies a bone please.

The Beatles expansion is a good start. =)

LittleBigPlanet Review (PS3)

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

My first review of 2009 and it ends up being rather contrary to popular opinion. The subject: my biggest disappointment of 2008, LittleBigPlanet.

Outrageous! How is this even possible, here in this haven for cute, side scrolling, jumpers? That this darling game, this honored above all, innovative, creative game could be called out in such a manner is…inconceivable!

Shocking, I know. Frankly I was surprised by my dislike of the game. But no amount of cute graphics could make up for its fatal flaws in game mechanics.

Rockband 2 – finally

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

When it comes to rhythm games I subscribe to the dancing versions and studiously avoid the guitar based ones (not to name names or anything). Since I am such a devotee, many found my abject repulsion of the guitar version to be shocking. I blame it on unapproachable music and controllers, but the core reason is that I am just not drawn in.

Rockband just got lumped in with the rest. The husband wanted it so badly, but I came up with excuse after excuse; we already own a guitar game, where do we put all that stuff that it comes with, its soooo expensive, we don’t have enough people to play with, etc. His desperation manifested itself into an “I want it” dance that looked strangely like the pee pee dance.

I just couldn’t find the love require to purchase it, I mean its so much stuff and so expensive, and and and.

And then we attended a party this evening that revolved mainly around the brand new Rockband 2. I saw those drums in the middle of the floor and every excuse seemed completely meaningless; I wanted nothing more then to thrash all night long. Suddenly I was doing my very own “I want it” dance.

We left the party early and picked it up. Now our living room is full of fake instruments.

Side note here, my husband could have gone out at any time to get himself a copy.

Thanks Sweet-stuff for waiting until I found the love. I know I’m slow sometimes. =)

PS3 enters our home!

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

This week, my husband came home with the George Forman of Consoles – the Playstation 3. (His words btw.) There would have been big (HUGE) trouble, but he came prepared. He blinded me with MarioKart Wii and snuck the PS3 in while I was distracted. Sneaky!

The xBox managed to invade our house in a very similar fashion (both the original and the 360, you would think I would have caught on by now.)

Why should I mind? There shall be no competition for my Wii! Okay well not really, but I don’t abide by purchasing a console that is lacking good, playable games.

So the husband came up with three good reasons that he just HAD to get a PS3.
1) GTA4
2) MLB 08 doesn’t crash repeatedly like it does on the PS2
3) Grand Turismo 5

Basically it’s going to be a man machine for a while. Eventually I will find some games I am interested in playing, mayhap GTA4.
I can wait, I did with the xBox, I can with the PS3.

Enjoy!
