Happy 2012 Everyone!

Ringing in the new year with warm chocolate chip cookies, champagne, and the new World of Warcraft TCG Dungeon Decks. Playing the Goblin Shaman in Shadowfang Keep. Really great cooperative play, makes this a really fun game experience.

D&D – Ashardalon and Castle Ravenloft Review (Board Games)

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

This dastardly tale begins in a rather well lit game store – a surprisingly clean and well-organized game store, which is probably why our fair heroin enjoys shopping there. Though only on days when she can afford too, as every trip into the well organized and friendly game store results in purchases.

This particular day is no different as she discovers a new wonder, a miracle, a fabulous gem of a game and thus cannot leave the store without it. ‘Dungeons and Dragons – the Wrath of Ashardalon’ calls to her like a siren and she is helpless to resist. (See why she avoids going into the store?!!?)

Giddy with anticipation, she hauls the gigantic box to the counter. The weighty game promises not only cooperative game play, but also loads of figures and tokens and tiles and cards; all wrapped up with a nice Dungeons and Dragons bow.

Long has our heroin mourned the loss of a regular pen and paper RPG night. Might this game fill some of this void? Mayhap the friendly clerk at the store spoke the truth by calling the game a simplified Dungeon and Dragons for busy people.

Thus she called together her fair adventurers (yup, three dudes) and they set forth on their journey to vanquish Ashardalon, with a detour to Castle Ravenloft.

(Big) Boggle Review (Boardgame)

Title: (Big) Boggle Boardgame

I would have never thought of myself as a word game fan. My Scrabble skills are horrendous at best, even Bananagrams is a challenge, but then it really comes down to my horrible spelling. At least that is what I blame my aversion to word games on. But Boggle changed all that.

Boggle is about creating words out of a fairly large pool of random letters. Short words are encouraged, the more the better. And since there is no need to fit the words on to a board in a specific manner, all that really matters is that it’s a legal word. Yaay!

So I may be a crappy speller, but I certainly can manage a few short words. And even if I did misspell a word, it wouldn’t matter much because there are always plenty more words that I did manage to actually spell correctly.

Geeky Girl Accessories on Etsy

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Last month I received an email from a Josh, who was kind enough to say that his wife and he enjoyed reading the site. (Yaaay! Thanks!) Also that he opened a shop on Etsy called Dice Designs.

Curious, I checked out the site. Its a cute little shop that sells the perfect accessories for any girl D&D gamer, jewelry made out of dice. =D

Turns out that there is a whole market of geeky jewelry on Etsy. Places like Josh’s that sell earrings and necklaces out of dice (quite fetching really) and then there are other places that make a variety of computer game jewelry and various accessories.

Small World – Be Not Afraid Review (Boardgame)

Friday, March 11th, 2011

I came across this expansion at my local game store (love that place!) The box said Small World, which automatically made me pause. As I noticed that it was an expansion I did not own, my internal debate team reared its ugly head; it went something like this: Ooooh Small World expansion….but we already have so many and do we really need even more races to play?…..but more is better right?….so many we can hardly fit everything into the one box?….but its SMALL WORLD!!..

On and on it went with me frozen in place. Gradually the opposing team gained footing (I really didn’t NEED another expansion) as I prepared to leave the premises and stop all the staring. Much cheering ensued on the opposing team.

The supporting team, fearing the end was neigh, rallied a last ditch effort! Caving, I took down the box to at least give it a once over before walking away.

Time slowed down, the angels sang, and ten geeks got laid, for I saw that the expansion came with its very own storage box. I had to have it!!

The losers slunk away defeated as the supporting team threw a winners party riot. (It gets loud in my head sometimes.)

Small World Review (Boardgame)

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

Small World has been my de facto first pick on game night for quite a while now. This odd tendency of mine emerges when a new board game catches my fancy and Small World certainly managed to hook me.

In short it’s a territory and conquering game. Held territory earns points, with the highest point holder at the end winning. Pretty standard stuff, but where it gets interesting is the race selection.

Brag Worthy

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Some people have fancy cars or big houses, some have fine clothes and jewelry, but when we have company over, my point of pride is always our game closet.

I have this pattern with guests and it goes something like this: welcome welcome, greeting at the door, rush through living area, kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom, and then finally our game closet! When I open the door, I envision a choir of angels singing, the clouds parting and rays of light illuminating the fabulousness that is the game closet. (Note to self: figure out way to hook up audio and lights to game closet door.)

Priestess of the Nerds

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

A dear friend and geek pal of mine recently moved away. Like all true hardcore geek friends, we met online. We used to play EverQuest together (back in the day when role-playing was still cool).priestess of the nerds WoW tcg fake card - token female gamer - girl gamer

Eventually it was discovered that we lived in the same general area. Not close enough to hang out all the time, but close enough to play some decent D&D every month or so.

And then he up and moved (and I haven’t played D&D since!!!! Damn j00!) Something about job relocation and buying a house, you know, extremely mature reasons. Of course I am supremely happy for him about all the positive stuff, but I’m sad I lost a geek friend. They are hard to come by, for me anyway, and for him apparently also.

Arkham Horror in the deep dark snow.

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

A bunch of us are spending the weekend up the mountain. We had the fortune to introduce Arkham Horror to some unsuspecting friends, and there is no better place to experience AH for the first time then in a log cabin surrounded by deep dark snow covered woods.

Despite the ominous environment we had the smoothest sailing game I have played in a long time. Beginners luck struck again. =) Never the less, all of us had a fabulous time.

Football, Lich king, and D&D

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Week five of football was a loss. But I am giving MVP of the week to Patrick Willis, who got 14 solo tackles and a sack. That man is a defensive dream machine. No wonder he is the defensive team captain.

This last weekend (week six) was a win. MVP goes to Payton Manning. I know, super predictable, but he had three touchdown passes and no interceptions. That’s good points! And again my defense scored a measly one point. Not sure how much longer it will take for me to realize that the New England defense is not what it was last year and I should drop them like the turd they are.

So now I’m at 3-3 (win-loss). Not bad really, but next week I play my husband which should make for an interesting weekend. I tend to seek him out for football advice. Not so this week.

Today was the big World of Warcraft patch for Wrath of the Lich King expansion. And just in time for me to hit seventy they decide to do a talent wipe. I had finally spent my last five points that I have been hoarding up (okay, avoiding spending), and now I have to do it all over again. Even worse, all the talents are new!!

Did you guys over there at Blizzard not read my post about the agony of deciding??? Just mean!

I played fourth edition Dungeons and Dragons and lived to tell of it. Okay it wasn’t that dramatic, but so far I am rather fond of the new rules. It’s different which in a lot of ways makes me feel better about shelling out for yet another D&D Player’s Handbook.
