30 Days of Video Games

This was something I caught the tail end of on another blog, but it seems to have gone around a while ago. Never one to be fazed by being late to the party, I thought this would be quite entertaining. My 400th post hurrah seemed like the perfect excuse to try my hand at answering these thirty video game questions.

But posting every day is a challenge. Very much wanting to succeed, I started working on the list slowly. First I wanted to simply find an answer to each question, which turned out to be trickier then I expected.

What really stood out for me was that most of the questions were story based. Aiming for meatier, more mechanics and strategy based questions; I decided to change a bunch of them, mostly the ones that I found not worth answering.

So here is my final list:

Day 1 – Very first video game
Day 2 – Favorite game franchise
Day 3 – Favorite genre
Day 4 – Your guilty pleasure game
Day 5 – Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were)
Day 6 – Most annoying character
Day 7 – Favorite game couple
Day 8 – Best soundtrack
Day 9 – Favorite Hand Held Game
Day 10 – Favorite gameplay mechanic
Day 11 – Gaming system of choice
Day 12 – Personally most significant game
Day 13 – A game you’ve played more then 100 hours
Day 14 – Favorite Character Class
Day 15 – Post a screenshot from the game you’re playing right now
Day 16 – Game with the best cut scenes
Day 17 – Favorite antagonist
Day 18 – Favorite protagonist
Day 19 – Least favorite gameplay mechanic
Day 20 – PvP or PvE
Day 21 – Game with the best story
Day 22 – A game sequel that disappointed you
Day 23 – Game you think had the best graphics or art style
Day 24 – Turn based or real time
Day 25 – What is in your ‘to be played’ pile
Day 26 – Best voice acting
Day 27 – Most memorable moment (good or bad)
Day 28 – Favorite game developer
Day 29 – A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving
Day 30 – Your favorite game of all time

Since I ended up changing a lot of the topics, I thought I would give a little run down as to why I chose to do so. These are what topics used to be, followed by the reason I changed them.

Day 2 – Your favorite character
This seemed redundant to me as day 18 already covers protagonist. Though I could think of a few side characters that I like, it seemed a wasted topic.

Day 3 – A game that is underrated
Underrated by whom? Me? My friends? The reviewers? Metacritic?

Day 9 – Saddest game scene
This almost always translates to most annoying scene or time allotted for going to the bathroom.

Day 10 – Best gameplay
What does this even mean? Changed the wording a bit to give the topic a bit more definition.

Day 12 – A game everyone should play
A game you like, duh, but I don’t know what that is. I sure hope you do.

Day 13 – A game you’ve played more than five times
Again overly vague. I play almost every game more then five times. But not five times to completion. And what about ongoing games that have no ending, do they not count? Thus I changed it to a specific time.

Day 14 – Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper
Yeah I don’t do wallpaper. Also waste of topic.

Day 19 – Picture of a game setting you wish you lived in
I don’t want to live in any game setting. They are all overrun with hideous monsters or the world is about to end. Also this is just another way of saying favorite pretty graphics and is another waste of a topic.

Day 20 – Favorite genre
I simply swapped Day 20 with Day 3 since I found the topics to flow better that way.

Day 24 – Favorite classic game
Define classic, 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit; or 2D, 3D; or real time, turn based? Overly subjective and according to my definition of classic, has just far too many favorites under this topic to list only one.

Day 25 – A game you plan on playing
I don’t tend to plan ahead much. What I do have is a huge backlog in my to play pile.

Day 27 – Most epic scene ever
Really more story stuff? Story scenes are never as epic for me as events that I actually contribute to or participate in.

Quite a few changed topics, but I have to say that I’m very glad that I fixed the list before I started it in August. Now I’m just trying to pre write as many as I can, thus giving me the best chance to complete all thirty days in thirty days.

Day one starts tomorrow!!

I think the idea behind the original #2 was that for some people, their favorite character was perhaps a villain:
Bowser, Kerrigan, Diablo, Scorpion, Ganon, Kefka, Sephiroth, Albert Wesker, Mother Brain, GlaDOS…

  2. Myrmidian Says:

    Doh, hit Submit too soon.

Anyway, you do have Antagonist separately, but I’m guessing the goal was to see if more people liked bad guys or good guys overall.

  3. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

Sure. But an argument could be made for each topic that I changed.
Beyond that I found the question redundant and boring, I wanted to expand the topics as much as I could. Many of them tended to be very similar.
    =P

  4. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

And Scorpion is a good guy. Always has been always will be. LALALLAALALAALALAALALAALLALALALAL! I can’t hear you trying to correct me. =P

  5. Jaaboo Says:

I am trying to at least get some quick answers written down before I get swayed by others on some of these, and I have some clarification questions for you, TFG.

#4 – Like a bad game that you like playing?
#12 – This is just the game that means the most to you for whatever reason?

You’re right, this is a hard list to come up with. #5 and #10 are especially hard for me to focus in on a single thing.

  6. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

Yeah I totally agree that the questions are not very clear, which is why I did change a few of them.

#4 I interpreted…well you will see what I chose, but I think it could be a bad game you like playing or a game you are reluctant to admit you like. I guess maybe its your pint of ice cream game. After having played it you feel a little sick to your stomach, but it tasted so very good at the time. =D

#12 Is a category I came up with and I think it can span a range of possibilities. A game that had an impact on your life, or brought you through a hard time in your life, or awakened you to new possibilities, or blew your mind.

I was trying to come up with questions that wouldn’t all have the same answer or at least give other games a chance to shine. The hard part was keeping the category title simple yet concise.

#10 is giving me fits also, even after I feel that I tried to clarify the category a bit.

As for the multiple answers, I gave up on that long ago. I try to find a front runner, but found plenty of other worthy successors. So go for it. No need to limit yourself. =D
