If you have the PC version, I would heavily recommend Empowered Magic if you want to play a mage. Magic out of the box was terribly underpowered unless/until you leveled enchanting to make the cost = 0 and took the Impact perk.

Restoration when I need. Oh heavy armor mostly and I sneak and lock pick as needed. Everything else I ignore.
Haven’t bothered with smithing or enchanting yet. But I am very into collecting stuff. My house overfloweth, as they say. =P
