Day 26 – Best voice acting

When thinking about this category, it became apparent that the most important feature for me was that the voice acting/story was something I actually wanted to listen too. It really didn’t end up mattering how awesome the performance was if it was linked to a story that I just wanted to skip over every single time.

But finding a game that had voice acting and a story I wanted to listen to, that didn’t make me cringe every time some new bit started and that I didn’t try to skip it as soon as possible, was rather challenging. In the end, all the games that topped my list were RTSs.

Why RTSs? Well, they tend to be low on story or monologues, but still have a lot of nifty snippets of brilliant voice acting.

Thus my choice for best voice acting is WarCraft 2. I actually spent extra time clicking on all my little units just to see what they would say because they said some hilarious stuff. ‘Work work’, best line ever, but then I’m easily amused. =)

You make a good point there. I loved cycling through those voices too. Even the sheep were worth clicking. :p I might have to change how I approach this one. I would lean towards Saints Row 3, if only for the fact that you have multiple VAs doing the same / similar lines.

I was a little worried about this category since I knew I wasn’t going to pick any of the more obvious answers. While there are a lot of great one liners in that game, its not really what I would call heavy on the voice acting. (Which is exactly what I like!)

Wow yeah you went a direction I would not have, but I think I like your answer better. I was going to go with the “default” of Mass Effect series – big name voice actors at the top of their careers, etc. But Warcraft 2, hell yeah. I loved clicking on units.

So I’ll go with Civ 4 for Leonard Nimoy’s reading of the technology quotes.

The fact that SR wasn’t heavy on the voice acting is one reason I favor it. Some games are a little too heavy on it. Some just don’t need it, IMO. I find the talent can be wasted in MMOs, where people aren’t necessarily going to sit through all the sound bites or care to hear the same thing every time you hail an NPC. I’ve heard very little (if any) of what EQ2 has to offer.

I play most games with the sound off, but I have strong memories of John Rhys-Davies as the narrator in Quest for Glory 4.

Same here about the sound. Especially for games where i have to raid. Then its all about listening to raid chat anyway. =P
