Token Female Gamer

A dear friend and geek pal of mine recently moved away. Like all true hardcore geek friends, we met online. We used to play EverQuest together (back in the day when role-playing was still cool).

Eventually it was discovered that we lived in the same general area. Not close enough to hang out all the time, but close enough to play some decent D&D every month or so.

And then he up and moved (and I haven’t played D&D since!!!! Damn j00!) Something about job relocation and buying a house, you know, extremely mature reasons. Of course I am supremely happy for him about all the positive stuff, but I’m sad I lost a geek friend. They are hard to come by, for me anyway, and for him apparently also.

He recently talked about trying to join a D&D night at his (now) local game store. I had to get the scoop on how it went. The conversation made me giggle all day so I want to share. (Only edited for spelling and punctuation.)

me: Oh how did the D&D event go?
Josh: I didn’t go, I backed out
me: …
Josh: I am joining an online game with some people I know, at least its people I know, ya know?
me: Sure but how are you going to meet new people this way?
Josh: You have a point, but I don’t know, just not feeling it.
me: I totally understand about the not feeling it, but again, I think its one of those situations that you have to get past that point and give it the old college try before you can honestly say its not for you.
Josh: True. I will give it a try.
me: Well in the end it is up to you. =P I’m just playing devils advocate really. I have a really hard time going to meet new people by myself, especially geeky stuff. I’m always worried people will not believe that I’m geeky enough. Plus I’m shy.
Josh: Well I’m just also worried that people might be too geeky, in that … bad geeky way, and then I’ll just feel uncomfortable.
me: True, but you will never know unless you try, and really what have you got to loose? If you don’t like it you don’t have to go again.
Josh: Oh I know. Just not ready yet :)
Josh: Its good to know that you’re looking out for my immortal geek soul :D
me: Well I worry that it will fade away.

Still trying to work in “Mistress” somewhere.

His geek soul isn’t in that much peril as I did manage to convince him to play World of Warcraft again. This in turn convinced his wife to play again. I think my work here is done.
