Borderlands 2

Today is the release date of Borderlands 2. Some of my friends have made this an ‘official holiday’, aka staying home sick to play the game. Having not played the first one (its still sitting in plastic on my to play pile) I dont quite understand the need to use up a sick day.

But the developers including Ellie, a character design that goes totally against traditional female stereotypes, certainly peaked my interest. This sort of thinking out of the box with female characters is really something I want to support.

So I will at least try the game. But since I dont really know anything about either game, do I play Borderlands first? Does it matter?

I’ve never played the first either so I guess I’m waiting for the inevitable Steam sale to come back around. And to get bored of GW2.

I’m waiting on the Christmas sale, too. My guess is you don’t need to play the first, unless there’s some kind of story worth following.

Well I’m really hoping it isn’t a Mass Effect carry over the story sort of thing, because I have Borderlands for the PS3, but am hoping to get 2 for Xbox so I have a small chance of maybe playing multiplayer with friends who seem stuck to the Xbox. =P

I hate that about my friends too. They’re all on xbox :p

Why can’t we all just get along. =(

Vacation days, not sick days :P

Its not like ME. You could play the second without play the first one but you would miss a lot of the jokes. The thing about Borderlands is it is funny as hell. You would miss out on a lot of inside jokes not playing the first. 4 of us were playing together last night and we all were saying the NPCs taglines from the first game when we saw them in the second.

Id say play the first one first, and make sure you have your sound on so you can hear all the dialog.

Well I rushed into Borderlands 2 already. I figure, if I like it a huge amount, I can always go back and play the first one. =/

I have a lot of problems with the second one. I’ll wait until you’ve played a bit before I bring them up though. I want to get your thoughts on it first.

Is the first one different??? This one was supposed to be better. =/

I think BL2 is very similar to the first one, the big difference being the playable characters. The powers these characters have are completely different.

I feel BL2 is better than the first, but not mind-blowing better. I think everything in the game works 80-90% of the way it did in the first but was changed slightly for the better.

The two things I am not fond of are:
    1) The snow setting. Seems like over 1/2 the game is spent in the snow. I know the end of BL1 was set in snow, but the bulk of the game was desert. To me it’s like they set “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” in the snow. It just doesn’t feel quite right.

    2) The menus. They look much better, but changing your equipped items is harder to navigate. There are times I can’t see items in my inventory because the character model is in front of it.

My complaint about the snow is probably a reason why I disliked the Island of Dr. Ned (who totally isn’t Dr. Zed) since it was more like a jungle.

I’m glad I started with the second as I’m not finding myself liking it enough to want to go back and play the first.

Having played both, if I only played one it would have been BL1 and the DLC. As far as story and setting goes, the first one was better. The second brought some gameplay improvements, but the story and setting wasn’t as good.

Well story hasn’t been a draw for me when it comes to games. This one is fine and it doesn’t take up a lot of time. which is always good. =D
