Day 16 – Game with the best cut scenes

I’m not a big fan of cut scenes, mainly because it seems that cut scenes have become so ubiquitous that they are turning games into movies. And since I want to play a game and not watch an interactive movie, I find myself rather resentful of the overabundance of cut scene presence.

That being said, games were not always a matter of running from one cut scene to the next. Due to the limitations of storage space and computer processing power, developers had to limit their visual intermissions. Clearly I long for the days of brevity. =)

Never the less, I was just as taken with the beauty of new fangled graphics as any impressionable child. My first real memory of being in awe of ‘the pretty graphics’ is Final Fantasy 8. It was interspersed with high quality cut scenes, but never felt like the movie aspect was overshadowing the game.

FF8 was actually the first final fantasy game I played (I have played sequels and prequels since then) and I was really blown away by the entire game, graphics, cut scenes, story, game play, and all; instant devotion. =)

I think today is going to be Mass Effect day, answering questions 16 & 17.

For best cut scenes, I went with Mass Effect 2. It doesn’t hurt that they had an all-star cast of voice actors, Seth Green, David West, Martin Sheen, etc. I think they got it right with ME2. I agree with you on too many cut scenes, and ME3 honestly was just riddled with them. I hated it.

I really didn’t feel like I could pick any contemporary game because every game out there has cut scenes. Nothing about any of them seems extraordinary or unique.

I enjoy a good cutscene. I only find it gets aggravating when you run into those that you can’t skip.

FF8 is definitely a contender for my favorite.

I also feel that cut scenes with voice-overs don’t belong in an MMO. I’ll go into some detail next month. ^_^

Vs cut scenes with character dialogue? Hmm interesting distinction. In general I’m against cut scenes. I would rather have non since it seem that developers can’t bring themselves to curb their insatiable urge to add more. =D

Karateka, yeah I had to google that one. That might just win for most obscure game yet. =D
