Day 30 – Your favorite game of all time

Looking back over the past twenty-nine days, it is clear to me that most of the games discussed thus far could easily qualify for favorite game. I deliberately chose games that I liked for more reasons than simply excelling in one category. But choose I must, even though I’m sneaking in the past twenty-nine days as runners up.

My final choice is Paper Mario. It’s actually quite a perfect choice, as it manages to represent many of my answers from the past few weeks – Mario, RPGs, super cute graphics, turn based gameplay, and teamwork.

It’s pretty clear that I loved almost everything about this game. The graphics were incredibly cute with the paper characters in a half 3D world. I loved that I got team members with benefits. Skills were incredibly fun to play with and adjust. The turn based combat was a perfect balance between twitch based jumping games and slow RPG combat. I even liked the story.

Paper Mario left me with such a great impression that I still think about how much I loved the game, ten years later!

There you have it, my final answer.

I’ve thought about a lot of games, but nothing yet has come up that would even challenge my knee-jerk reaction to this question: Ocarina of Time.

Ocarina in my mind was the pinnacle of the Zelda series. It matched outstanding graphics (that honestly even hold up today, they were just very clean) with engaging gameplay, a great story to follow around, interesting side quests, awesome items (3D hookshot, \m/) and one of my favorite cut scenes of Link, Ganon and Zelda, locked for the first time in what would become their eternal struggle.

Even Navi’s incessant need for attention or the Water Temple (designed, seriously, by assholes) couldn’t ruin my love for this game.

So – quite possibly the best Zelda game, quite possibly the best critically received video game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

    PS: Poor Saria.

    Tough one…

The game I have played the most hours of: EQ
The game that blew my mind: Ultima IV and Doom
My favorite game: Super Mario World, Pokemon, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Master of Orion, Angband

I’m not sure if I can choose just one…
It’s like trying to choose your favorite kid!

This will be tough. I just thought of 2 more major contenders for this category.

Impossible to pick just one really, but thats why I retroactively say all thirty days are part of my favorites really. Well most of them anyway. =D

Maybe a few I havn’t mentioned are Animal Crossing, Quake (old school), StarCraft, SimCity, Zelda Windwaker, Super Mario 3. Sure there are more I am missing. =/

Paper Mario was pretty awesome. I’m sorry I missed it the first time through as it was a little buggy trying to play it via emulator.
