Day 1 – Very first video game

Perfect place to begin, though I will admit I am dating myself with this admission. No matter, it’s where my little gaming journey began.

My very first game was a hand held game from Nintendo called Donkey Kong Jr. My mother purchased it for me right before we embarked on a nine-hour flight to Europe. Considering that I was around four years old at the time, it was quite a brilliant move, because I was absolutely engrossed in that game for almost the entire flight.

In fact I became so devoted to this game that I could play it through multiple times in a row.

Strangely enough, this did not result in my becoming a Donkey Kong fan. But I can thank Donkey Kong for being the first reason I became a huge gaming nerd. Thanks DK Jr! <3

For anyone interested in playing it, I found a simulator online. Oh nostalgia! Play it here: http://www.pica-pic.com/#/donkey_kong_jr/

    Dating yourself? Geez… so young.

I think mine must have been something on the Atari 2600 or my friend’s Commodore 64. Either Adventure or Space Invaders.

  3. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

Well it was a long time ago. =P Funny thing is that i didn’t play any other computer games until later when I could go to the arcade by myself. Then it was Super Mario Bros. Oh yeah!

Space Invaders, nice! Adventure was all reading wasn’t it?

  4. Jaaboo Says:

Adventure was like, the first action RPG. Diablo? Totally an Adventure ripoff.

  6. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

Diablo was actually an Angband rip off but whatever. Besides Adventure was just a D&D port. =P

    Pong for me…

  8. Jaaboo Says:

I thought Pong might have been mine, but I think I would have reached for the Space Invaders or Combat (?) carts first. Flea market Atari, oh man that was a great day.

  9. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

I dont think I ever actually played Pong, only later versions thereof. I wonder if its still possible to play the original.

My first game was similar… but I think it was a Popeye game where you had to punch Bluto off the pier.

Oh wow, I forgot all about this game. My brother had it and I played it a few times and enjoyed it. I think my first game of my own was probably Jump Joe (or Janitor Joe).

Its funny, this game was not only my first, but also my only game for quite a while. Which means I dont really know about its contemporaries. My gaming has definitely expanded quite a bit ever since I had my own income. Makes a difference being able to purchase the games I would like. Then again if I had had more access as a child I might not have done anything besides play computer games. =)

I was way too much of a bookworm to get too much into video games, but I had plenty that I loved and chose for myself. Getting hooked on tetris meant I got all the variants, facestris, welltris, wordtris, and blockout (3D tetris!). I also loved breakout, think quick, boulderdash construction kit and of course my favorite- Space Station Oblivion. My love of puzzle games was very evident from the beginning. Pretty much all PC games though, my dad worked for a computer store so I learned to use a computer early on. My brother moved to a Sega Master system when it came out, but I still stuck with my PC games until Phantasy Star.

  14. TokenFemaleGamer Says:

Wow! You played far more games growing up then I did. =D
Guess I’m making up for it now. Hehe.
I should loan you the Prof Layton games for the DS. They are great fun and have some decent puzzles in them. Well more like Brain teasers really. =)

    some pong knockoff from Sears.
