Reading

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

I finally updated my pages read yesterday and something tells me that I might not make the 50k pages I was aiming for. Granted I still have 26 days left, which is only 636 pages a day.

Yeah that’s not going to happen. Oh well. I still managed to read 94 books, giving me a fair chance at hitting 100 books this year. So yaay.

Moving right along, ElfQuest was one of my all time favorite graphic novels when I was younger. I just found out that every single edition is online!! http://www.elfquest.com/gallery/OnlineComics3.html

Not quite as good as the real thing, but since they are all out of print I thought it a pretty decent find. =)

Super awesome bonus, someone made a fan film. It’s all the female characters which is great, but thats only half the story. Ah well. Its quite impressive production quality. http://elfquestfantrailer.com/

Dressing up…

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Every year, around Halloween (or major conventions), this overwhelming urge to dress up (~cough~ Cosplay ~cough~) arises. I dream of elaborate costumes with complicated props and armor, running around pretending to be Wonder Woman or some fabulously giddy anime character.

I formulate a strategic plan of attack, what fabrics to use, which shoes to modify, and a basic timeline (which usually doesn’t take into account the 5 million other things I have to do). I research online, which is of course when reality sets in and I realize that I have neither the time nor the stamina to really pull it off.

But this month the Codex pre-made costume was released. Right up my alley in the geeky department and it’s the perfect amount of time commitment for me. (Codex is Felicia Day’s online character in the web series “The Guild”. WATCH THIS!)

I might be able to pull off a costume for this Halloween after all. =D

15 people you’ll see at every nerd convention.

This is just too awesome not to share. Awesome and so very true.

The only one they missed was a Storm Trooper.

Dragon Age: Redemption 1st Episode
This is Felicia Day’s Dragon Age web series and the first episode was just released on youtube. I was pleasantly surprised, as these fantasy shows can end up a bit cheap looking. She did a great job making it fun, engaging, and feasible. In fact I might just go try Dragon Age. =)

Avengers Movie official Trailer
This movie series that Marvel has pulled off is incredible. Although The Hulk tanked, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor all did well enough to warrant an Avengers Movie. Hopefully it will come together, with the help of Joss Whedon, and astound us with its magnificence.

How did I ever find out about stuff before Facebook?

Reading short.

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Well, its now a little over half way through the year and I’m only at 17,500 pages read. Waaaay behind. Going to have to start reading magazines or something. Maybe I should start counting quest text as pages. Guild chat? Okay that’s probably a bit too much like cheating.

Still I’m almost 8000 pages behind which is a bit daunting. Maybe I should start counting graphic novels at least. I mean they qualify as books, at least according to Goodreads. Hmmmmm.

Thor Review (Movie)

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

I was fortunate enough to see the new Thor movie last Saturday. That’s right, five days early!! Husband job perk. =D
(Guess that technically makes this a preview, eh, whatever.)

Loved this movie. It managed to find that magic balance between action, computer graphics, humanity, romance, and humor. Yet its still Thor with all sorts of various Marvel nods. Even the lore was spot on (confirmed by my husband) according to the J. Michael Straczynski Thor storyline. (JMS is the guy behind Babylon 5!! <3 B5!)

It should be noted that this is still a Super Hero movie. Suspension of disbelief is a bonus, as is a tolerance for some cheesy moments. But Kenneth Branagh did such a fabulous job directing, the actors were spot on and well picked, the script was actually supportive of the story and the characters, that much of the Super Hero foibles of the past are handled with such grace as to render them inconsequential.

WonderCon

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

There is nothing quite as rejuvenating as a fabulously large comic book (and more) convention only thirty minutes from my house. WonderCon is so close I don’t have to fly anywhere, stay in expensive hotels, and curb spending because my carrying capacity on the plane is limited. All the fun without any of the drawbacks. Certainly one of the huge perks of city living, one that I would be remiss in not enjoying to the fullest.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Review (DVD)

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a romantic comedy with superhero and computer game tendencies. Scott meets the girl of his dreams and must face down her evil ex-boyfriends to date her.

At first glance this movie seems like just another quirky Michael Cera movie, but blindly lumping it into that odd collection would be a huge injustice. The awesomeness of this movie really sneaks up on you. Not until the end is the full extent of this movie’s brilliance recognizable.

G.I. Joe – The Rise of Cobra Review

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Last night I was wrapping presents and wanted something to watch to make the process a bit more entertaining. After perusing the instant watch list on Netflix, G.I. Joe seemed like the a good brainless option.

Its brainless alright. Beyond brainless really and more like the worst movie of all time!

I say this as a lover of bad movies, a believer in the “B” genre, and a devout snide commentator. Even all my childhood G.I.Joe nostalgia wasn’t enough to save this movie. (I played with GI Joe figures for crying out loud, there is nostalgia there!! Though it might be dead now.)

The plot made no sense, the script was irritating, the characters were strange, plus there were like five million of them which made it impossible to keep track. Just terrible. I found almost nothing forgivable about the movie. The CG was fine. Oh and it did encourage me to hurry up with my wrapping.

Worst movie ever! Not even going to bother rating it. Its so bad I’m embarrassed to say I watched as much of it as I did. Turned it off fifteen minutes before the end because I was done with my present wrapping and had no interest in watching any more. Spare yourself, avoid this movie.
