Geek and Sundry Season 2

Monday, April 29th, 2013

geek and sundry youtube channel your judgement is not my problem taking back the geek titel - token female gamer girl gamer woman gamer geek gamer nerd i love gamingIn other fabulous April news (quick before the month is over!), Geek and Sundry has  been renewed for season 2 and its already begun airing brand new shows!! The announcement went live very close to April 1st, thankfully it wasn’t a joke and Geek and Sundry will remain alive and youtubing for another year. (Yes, I just turned youTube into a verb!)

Much of the show line up has changed and though I’m sad to see Sword and Laser go, I am super happy that Space Janitors finally has new episodes. It is by far the most entertaining show I’ve seen on youTube, probably ever. Then again I don’t go in for most of the reality based stuff that youTube panders.

But the best thing to come out of this announcement was the message that Felicia Day shared in her announcement video. After lamenting the commodification and hate mongering that has become the Geek online life, she made a call for taking it back, to honor the Geek we want to be regardless of anyone else’s opinion. “Your Judgment is not my problem” sums is up quite well and is a sentiment that I can fully support. Go Felicia Day!

Pathfinder ~ing

Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Real life has been busy of late, which of course means I dont write as much. Well not online anyway.

Lots of writing on paper, that ancient style of keeping records, which is quite appropriate since I have vaulted myself in the nebulous world of Game Mistressing. I am quite privileged to have my first GM experience include introducing six young ladies to this fabulous past time. Its a huge responsibility, but I am taking the fact that non of them wanted to stop playing after two and half hours as a sign that I did something right.

When the husband and I first conceived of this idea, we debated which system to use. We finally settled on Pathfinder (aka Dungeons and Dragons 3.75 and not WoTC). Having now played it, also for the first time (lots of firsts today), I have to say that its a really great system that keeps the core of what made D&D 3.5 great, but enhances is just enough to heighten playability. Its really well done.

Since we were all so new to the system, we took advantage of their beginners set. But I wasn’t going to stop there, when in doubt, buy more books. Did I mention I’ve been reading a lot of late? The Patherfinder Players Book is quite impressively hefty.

The great thing about the beginners box is that it made creating my own little story quite easy. Everything I needed to know in one small book.

For anyone wanting to get into pen and paper RPGs, I highly recommend the Pathfinder system. Its satisfyingly meaty, while still maintaining ease of play.

Veronica Mars Movie is a go!

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

veronica mars movie kickstarter total image - token female gamer girl gamer woman gamer geek nerd gamer i love gamingThe Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter has won kickstarter. By the end it reached a total of $5,702,153 and broke the record for most backers. Woooot, MOAR Veronica Mars!!! <3<3<3

While I am clearly excited that this will actually happen, the over all feeling surrounding this particular Kickstarter seems to be ambiguous. Though this is not the first movie to be Kickstarter funded, it is the first one backed by a major studio. Why does a movie studio need to get crowd funding if it then receives all the profits? Are they receiving profits?

It will be incredibly interesting to see what happens when the movie is released. Clearly the studio has no faith in it making any money as they looked to crowd funding for much of the budget, but what if it does become a huge hit?

Maybe they would make a sequel. =D

Veronica Mars, $2 Million in a Day

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

Holy shit, the Veronica Mars Movie Project is happening and all it took was a day. I can only imagine the scrambling that is going on behind the scenes trying to figure out some interesting stretch goals. Not that the fans don’t have plenty of suggestions, it is the internet after all.

With thirty more days to go, it will be interesting to see how much they end up making. As it stands right now there are still so many people giving money, you can literally watch the numbers increase. Its rather mesmerizing.

Someone tell Joss Whedon! Who knows, maybe a Firefly movie will show up someday on Kickstarter. Better start saving my money now!

More EverQuest Memories!

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

I was lucky enough to play on two different servers with two very different, yet awesome guilds. Inner Loop (last post’s pictures) ended up being my raiding guild, while Fourth Wall was my role playing guild. (Yup, I am that nerdy!)

While my bard in the Fourth Wall guild never made max level, she had a ton of really silly fun. Some of the best stories came out of spending time with these crazy people. =P

Dreamfall caught me Kickstarting

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Kickstarter seems to have become the Dr Frankenstein of ancient game franchises, as we keep seeing old favorites being brought back to life. Though I have been trying to keep away, the promise of a new Dreamfall game was too tempting to resist. Take my money!

From the Dreamfall Chapters: The longest Journey Kickstarter page about the Dreamfall series thus far:

The Longest Journey is a point-and-click adventure game that was released in 1999 (Europe) and 2000 (North America). The story of April Ryan, an unlikely heroine who goes on a very long journey to save the Balance between the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia, the game received amazing reviews and won multiple awards.

TLJ was followed in 2006 by Dreamfall: The Longest Journey on PC and Xbox. Continuing the story of April Ryan, and beginning the story of Zoë Castillo, the follow-up also received glowing reviews and won several game of the year awards, including awards for best story, best adventure game, best music and best voice acting.

Buy The Longest Journey + Dreamfall on Steam!

These were two excellent story based adventure games. Clearly finding funding for a sequel has been challenging, as its been almost ten years since the release of Dreamfall.  Thankfully crowd funding can make it happen!

Maybe I will go play the first two games again, as a refresher. Wonder how well they hold up.

Reading Challenge 2013

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

Look at me already being more productive! I finally updated my reading challenge for 2012 (I know, totally overdue!) and even though I managed to read 80 books last year, it only came to 25,860 pages. Bleh, that’s what I get for reading graphic novels. Ah well.

Onward to 2013s challenge, 100 books or 40,000 pages, whichever I manage first. (If last year is any indication I have no hope at 40k pages.) =P

For anyone interested to see what I have been reading, here is my book list on Goodreads.com. As for how I’m picking what to read, I’ve been following along with a few different online book cluby sort of things which are: Vaginal Fantasy Hangout, Geek Girls Book Club, and occasionally The Sword and Lazer.

That’s me playing Guild Wars 2 on my Desktop PC with chocolate and port and tea. My husband’s computer is directly to the left of mine. Side by side gaming. =)

Its so messy, but that’s all for authenticity, yeah. Authenticity. Lets call it that. =D

Day 53 – Male or female?

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

If given the option, I always pick female characters. Thankfully more and more games are making either gender available to play, but even in games where gender is assigned, I will go with the female option as my first choice.

Even though I have tried playing male characters, I simply don’t identify with them as much, which does impact my enjoyment of the game. My interest really wanes quicker.

This doesn’t mean that I never play games with male protagonists. If the game is good enough, it transcends gender. For example, Diablo 2’s necromancer is by far my favorite class, which only had the male gender as an option. On the other hand in Diablo 3, because either gender was available for each class, I made all my characters female.
