Day 51 – Game you love to hate, don’t get, wonder why anyone would buy

Friday, December 21st, 2012

deer hunter deer sighting screen shot image - token female gamer girl gamer woman gamer geekDeer Hunter! What is up with this game? Why is it so darn popular? I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!

There have been over twenty Deer Hunter games made in the past fifteen years, spanning various platforms. Its wide spread success has spawned other hunting simulation games, such as Bird Hunter, Carnivores, and Trophy Hunter.

Seriously, what about shooting Bambie is fun?

Day 41 – Favorite pet/mount

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

I’m a big fan of pets, from D2’s Necromancer with his hoard of minions to Pokemon’s wide selection of tamed battle pets. Maybe it’s just that I like minions, but I often find games where I have the option of having pets/minions as helpers, preferable. This is opposed to the games like Nintendogs, where the entire game revolves around the pets. Not that I don’t like these games, they are after all very cute and lovable, but I definitely prefer to go on adventures with my pets.

Though I really enjoy the hoard of mindless minions like the Necromancer’s skeletons, or the imps in Overlord, or Pikman, they aren’t very permanent. In Overlord the entire point is to sacrifice your minions, which makes it rather difficult to get overly attached to them.

Pokemon made this leap from random mass of pets, by encouraging each one be named. Not that I ever did this, because I was devoted to Pikachu. SOOOOOOOOooooo adorable. It was a hard day for me when I finally realized that Pikachu was not a very strong combatant. Never the less, Pikachu was certainly my first favorite pet. (Don’t even get me started on how much Pikachu paraphernalia I had.)

My geekiest pet award goes to my hunter dino pet that I named Grimlock. Though I originally thought that hunters in World of Warcraft would be pet collectors, akin to Pokemon Trainers, they ended up having a very limited selection of pets. This means that I chose my pets very carefully, thus Grimlock came about. Turns out that the Beast Master spec at the time was a total waste of space, so I had to give him up.

But they did put Battle Pets in WoW (probably to make it up to all those disappointed hunters) and my favorite for that is the very awesome Star Craft 2 Collectors Edition bonus pet, Mini Thor. What can I say; I have a soft spot for robots.

As for mounts, the game I play with the largest mount selection (!!!) is, by far, World of Warcraft (shocker!) And though I started my Warlock mostly because the class mount was a Nightmare and I really wanted to ride a flaming black horse, my current favorite is the very awesome Ice Skeleton Dragon mount (its actually called a Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher, but my name is really more descriptive.) =P

Guild Wars 2 Account Hacked

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Right before Halloween, after taking a little WoW break from Guild Wars 2, I decided to log in again and maybe do some fun Halloween events. Well, my email was rejected for no apparent reason. So I emailed costumer service at ArenaNet saying that I couldn’t log in to my account. They got back to me a day later saying that my issue had been passed on to another department and someone would get in touch with me soon.

Then silence for a month. A whole month!! I really should have complained sooner and not waited, but I’m busy and they did say they would get back to me.  I finally emailed them yesterday. Though I tried to be polite, the month long silence made it difficult. But they came through and as of today have restored my account.

Turns out it was hacked. Well, I assume that’s what it means, since  I now have to verify my email EVERY time I log in, bonus hardcore security measures. Also my level 5 hunter is now level 80.

It could of course be that the ArenaNet people felt really bad for me that they left me hanging for so long and bumped my character up to max level. Yeah, probably not.

I will say that it is really strange having a maxed out character that I have hardly played. Having not invested much more then picking the character’s name, gives me very little connection to it, not only in how to play, but also in familiarity. And knowing that someone else invested time and energy to level, actually makes me feel a little bad. I’m not sorry that I  have my account back, but I am rather sorry for all the time that was lost by someone out there.

My Mesmer thankfully was left alone! Still level 28 with all her gear. She always was my main and I really enjoyed exploring the world with her.

So thank you Hacker for not deleting or screwing up my characters, for not messing with the guild, for not selling all my stuff. Hope you had a good time playing your free version of Guild Wars 2, time to buy your own copy.

World of Warcraft – Cataclysm Review (PC, Mac)

Friday, September 14th, 2012

With Mists of Pandaria (MoP) about to go live, it’s clear that my blurb about Cataclysm is rather overdue. Not that much of it is relevant anymore, what with the recent MoP patch and all the changes to character classes. But there is plenty of time left to discuss (criticize?) MoP, onward to Cataclysm.

Day 14 – Favorite character class

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

I have a few criteria that I prioritize when picking a new class for a game. Usually my first pick will be whatever the female option is. Thankfully more and more games provide gender options for all classes.

My second pick is usually any class with pets or skeletons, really bonus bodies of any kind. There is nothing more satisfying then running through the Diablo 2 world with an army of skeletons. My first official World of Warcraft character was a hunter and then later I moved onto a Warlock, both pet classes.

The third pick is usually ranged dps, most often magic based. I almost always pick ranged over melee. This includes healing classes putting melee firmly in last place. Pet classes > ranged dps > healing > melee.

I will say though that in games that allow me to pick multiple characters and form my own party, I rarely pick pet classes. Basically I like having buddies and when I have an entire group, pets aren’t necessary. Which is why I will usually go for the mage or wizard.

Day 13 – A game you’ve played more then 100 hours

Monday, August 13th, 2012

The list of games that I have played for over 100 hours isn’t very long. Animal Crossing and Diablo 2 are two of them. EverQuest, the biggest time suck of all time, will probably always remain my number one most played game. By the time I finally quit, I had played over 300 days. Yes, days not hours. It took forever to do anything in that game.

But, I’m not playing any of those games anymore, which is why none of them is my final choice. World of Warcraft on the other hand I still play.

How much have I played it? I logged in to check my four most played characters and it’s a bit over 120 days. I have two accounts with three level 85 characters, two of which have full raid gear.

Yup, WoW is currently my most time intensive game. Seems like the clear choice. =)

85 x 3

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Last night I finally made 85 with my hunter (in World of Warcraft), which means I now have three characters at max level.
(Yes, lots of my spare time has been taken up with leveling. That and reading, as I am desperately trying to read my ten books for this month. Darn that needing to sleep. ~sigh~ Just means my post count takes a hit in the junk.)

Actually having three characters at max level is rather unusual for me. I’m not a poly-character sort of person. But Cataclysm has been so darn frustrating I have found myself with nothing else to do. Its gotten so bad I even broke down and started doing achievements!! ~shudder~

Well Patch 4.1 finally came out this week, which was supposed to be the Cataclysm revamp, and hopefully bring WoW back to resembling its previous Lich King incarnation a bit more. This has been the big reason I have held off reviewing Cataclysm, but its looking like the changes were not drastic enough to really effect the game much. Ah well.

Guess I will go on leveling characters and getting achievements. I do have two accounts, which leaves me lots of room for leveling characters. =D

4.01 Shell Shock

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

So the latest World of Warcraft patch (4.01) went live yesterday. After two hours of patch downloading and two hours of patch installing and finishing with another hour of post patch patching, I was finally able to get into the game! This is what greeted me:

WoW Update!

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Its about time for another little World of Warcraft update. And though I have been trying to keep WoW topics from overwhelming the site, I do still spend quite a lot of time playing it still and could go on and on. Thus I am consolidating all my latest news into one post.

Almost forgot to add that the Midsummer World Event began today which is the last world even that my warlock needs to complete the purple drake flying mount achievement.
