Ada Lovelace Day!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Its amazing to see what incredible work Ada Lovelace actually did. Imagine all the struggles she must have endured to even be heard. Imagine if more women had had her opportunities.

Thankfully, women now a days get far more encouragement from society. =)

Dedicating a day to all the women that have made the path into technology easier for each generation to come is a wonderful idea. They should all be celecreated, espcially Ada who as the very first programmer is a littler nearer and dearer to my heart.

Happy Ada Lovelace Day!

Top Five Game Related Movies

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

While Uwe Boll has garnered game to movie adaptations a horrible reputation, there are in fact a few movies about games that have managed to not offend, even entertain.

And though Mr. Boll can be attributed with the most recent epidemic of terrible remakes, the trend was set long before. Super Mario Bros anyone? In a way he is really just carrying on a long-standing tradition.

Actually there are more game related movies then I realized. This is a decent list.  I’m not sure how complete it is, what I can say is that most of the game movies that I have seen are on it.

Some of these movies found their way into my favorite pile and that’s what this is really all about.

I should mention that I chose these movies not for their award worthiness or for their ability to bring about world peace. They managed to sneak into my top five because I enjoyed watching them.  And lets not forget that the genre is sparse on quality, thus expectation is brought down a lot (a LOT).

Wario and Football

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

This PR gem that the Nintendo team came up with is well worth seeing. Its for their new Wario Land – Shake it! game.

http://www.youtube.com/experiencewii

So far the game is really entertaining.

**

Week three of fantasy football spelled tragedy for me. I went from the having the high score the first week to a dismal 51.53 points – lowest score. The real culprit was my defense – New England. They got me negative four points. That’s right, I would have been better off not playing a defense at all. Oh how the mighty have fallen. =/

It gets worse for next week; five of my guys are on byes. Then again my team has been performing so poorly, it’s hard to imagine it getting any worse.

Guest Review – Warhammer Online

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The people over at http://www.thewarhammerguide.com sent over a review of the new Warhammer Online game as a promotion for their site.

Guest reviews are always encouraged around here, =) especially since I will most likely not play this game much. Two reasons: it’s mostly PvP and it’s almost exactly like WoW.

The husband did bring home a copy for me yesterday. He installed it and we watched the cinematic (which was awesome!!). After watching him futz around a bit I told him that maybe I would try it after all.

So without further ado, here is our very first guest review/PR pitch. =)

*Warhammer Online Review*

It’s been a long time since a new MMO hit the market that actually had the entire industry buzzing, but Warhammer Online is about to do just that – of course buzz doesn’t necessarily get you anywhere if you don’t have a solid product. So, what is the final word on Age of Reckoning – is it the WoW killer everyone has been dreaming of, or is it another just another Age of Conan – a whole bunch of promise with nothing to back it up?

Demo Reviews: Geometry Wars 2 and Braid Game (xBox Live)

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Both of these are demo reviews. Wanting to indicate that within the review I used a new special mushroom type. Seems that I will use any excuse to come up with new mushroom type. =)

I really didn’t feel good about doing a whole review on either. Even though I fully utilized the playtime of each demo, I was limited by what sections of the games were available. Its doubtful I made it past an hour play on either.

Each game was looked at more in regards to whether the demo would encourage purchasing the full version or not.

That being said, I have not purchased the full version of either game. Why? Well you will have to read the reviews to find out.

It did occur to me while writing the reviews, that maybe I should purchase these games, just so I can support the small developers, the underdogs, and the innovators. The game industry needs more Geometry Wars and Braids out there pushing the boundaries, helping everyone redefine what is profitable and worthwhile.

Dollar voting, it’s what businesses understand.

It boggles the mind…

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

So supposedly Nintendo no longer cares about us core gamers. (Yes I’m a core gamer, sheesh!)

Well all is not as it seems. Lets delve further into the murky system of game news.
Remember that game telephone, where one person wispers something to another and it goes around until the last person comes up with a completely garbled version of the original sentence? It seems to me that the gaming news on the internet has become a distorted version of this game. Let me demonstrate.
