Geek and Sundry Season 2

Monday, April 29th, 2013

geek and sundry youtube channel your judgement is not my problem taking back the geek titel - token female gamer girl gamer woman gamer geek gamer nerd i love gamingIn other fabulous April news (quick before the month is over!), Geek and Sundry has  been renewed for season 2 and its already begun airing brand new shows!! The announcement went live very close to April 1st, thankfully it wasn’t a joke and Geek and Sundry will remain alive and youtubing for another year. (Yes, I just turned youTube into a verb!)

Much of the show line up has changed and though I’m sad to see Sword and Laser go, I am super happy that Space Janitors finally has new episodes. It is by far the most entertaining show I’ve seen on youTube, probably ever. Then again I don’t go in for most of the reality based stuff that youTube panders.

But the best thing to come out of this announcement was the message that Felicia Day shared in her announcement video. After lamenting the commodification and hate mongering that has become the Geek online life, she made a call for taking it back, to honor the Geek we want to be regardless of anyone else’s opinion. “Your Judgment is not my problem” sums is up quite well and is a sentiment that I can fully support. Go Felicia Day!

Aisha Tyler Responds to the Hate

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Not sure what is going on, but there seems to be a shit ton of hate going around the internet of late. Well at least in the circles I frequent which mostly revolves around gaming and geeky ladies. For some reason all the dirt bags have come out the spread the hate to the geekier ladies of the internet.

The Tropes vs Women Kickstarter that I linked a few days ago has just gotten bombarded with hate everything. Its gone so far beyond the usual harassment that I can hardly believe it. People really have this much fear and hate for women gamers? And then for a piece that is simply a critical look at Women portrayed in games, which I might add is completely voluntary to watch or support. It really boggles the mind.

And then Felicia Day releases a country music video and people just trash it. WHAT? Why? I’m not the biggest country music fan, but I can still appreciate its cuteness. What is wrong with people?

Aisha Tyler, in response to all the hate she has lobbed at her, for being a gamer of all things, responded today. Frankly I think she speaks for every lady gamer.

Its so incredibly awesome I am going to repost the entire thing, but it’s copied from her Facebook page. Follow her. She is incredible!

I play.

I’ve played since I was a little kid.
Since I begged my dad to buy me a Nintendo LCD Donkey Kong, Jr.
Since I blew through three weeks’ allowance playing Defender at the laundromat.
Since you were a twinge in the left side of your daddy’s underoos.

I’ve been a gamer since I made friends with a girl in the 5th grade just to get at her Atari.
Since I missed the bus playing Galaga after school.
Since I missed the start of Return of the Jedi playing Tempest in the theater lobby.

You think you know. You don’t know.

I’ve been a gamer since before you could read.
Since I aced midterms after staying up all night playing Evil Tetris.
Since I became dorm champ at Leisure Suit Larry.
Since I double-wielded on Time Crisis 3 at Fuddrucker’s.

I was a voice in not one, but two major video game titles.
I hosted the Reach Beta tutorial.
I was a Gears of War superfan panelist at ComicCon.
I hosted the Ubisoft presser at E3 2012.
I didn’t do any of it for the money.
For most I got paid next to nothing, and for some, less than that.

I did it because I love video games.
Because I’ve dreamt since I was a kid of being in one of the games I love.
How many games have you done voices for?
How many cons have you repped at?
Your buddy’s Unreal Tournament garage deathmatch doesn’t count.

I go to E3 each year because I love video games.
Because new titles still get me high.
Because I still love getting swag.
Love wearing my gamer pride on my sleeve.
People ask me what console I play.
Motherfucker, ALL of them.

I get invited to E3 because real gamers know I’m a gamer.
I don’t do it for the money.
I have plenty of money.
I don’t do it for the fame.
Fuck fame.
I do it because I love video games.

I don’t give out my gamertag because I don’t want a mess of noob jackholes lining up
to assassinate me on XBL.
I don’t give a shit what you think about my gamerscore.
I don’t play to prove a point.
I don’t play to be the best.
I play because I love it.

I play.
I’ve been playing my whole life.
I’m not ashamed of it.
I don’t apologize for it.
It’s who I am.
To the core.
I’m a gamer.

So to all the haters out there who claim I don’t play;
To the GAF dicks,
Gamespot trolls,
To every illiterate racist douchebag on Youtube:
Flame away. Go nuts.
Post every jackass comment your heart desires.
I’ll still be playing when your mom’s kicked you out of her basement
and you have to sell your old-ass console
and get a real job.

For now, I say to you respectfully,
and I mean this from the bottom of my heart,
GFYS.

I loved her before, but now Aisha Tyler just elevated herself to Goddess. <3 Aisha

Sticking with the no helm look.

Friday, April 27th, 2012

I’ve been on and off World of Warcraft for a bit now. The regular raid I was running with my Warlock went kaput, which pretty much began my WoW vacation. Well sort of vacation, since I have been getting on sporadically to finish up some achievements, like Glory of The Cataclysm Hero.

Last night, during said achievement run, one of the guys brought his priest, who happens to be in full Tier 13 gear. I have never before coveted a look quite as much as this one. The whole set together is incredibly awesome looking. Almost seems like an homage to V for Vendetta. Anyway that’s what it made me think of.

I have always played with my helmet graphic off. In general, my character’s pony tail is far preferable to look at, then any of the helm graphics. But bolstered by the priest T13 look, I turned helm graphics on, just too see what my Warlocks T13 helm graphic looked like. Couldn’t be too bad right? Wrong.

Tentacle coming out of my face. Yeah. So wrong. Warlocks get screwed again. ~sigh~

Husbands who like to min/max, this is the game for you!

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Hey Munchkin husbands everywhere, you are in luck. Play Prime World with your wife and get bonus stats!

The developers are trying to support mixed gender groups, yet are relying on Facebook account information to determine actual gender. Laughable and unreliable. Susana Polo of the Mary Sue summed it up best:

…the potential to incentivize seeing the players of the opposite gender as a statistic that needs to be maintained, rather than a basic fact of life (not to mention insensitivity to a spectrum of trans players). While that wouldn’t necessarily create an unequal situation in a population with equal gender ratios, in one with an admitted majority of men it has the potential to lead to players treating female players as a numerical advantage rather than fellow players, if the game’s balance favors these gender-based talents.

Here’s an idea, instead of resorting to bribes, make a game that the ladies will want to play.

See John Carter

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

All the negative reviews of John Carter have left me a rather disappointed. I view see this movie as an homage to the history of Science Fiction, a genre that is near and dear to my heart.

I could go on, but the point I’m trying to get at, for the purpose of this post, is that some feel the marketing of the movie failed. The folks over at thejohncarterfiles.com discuss this ad nauseum, but what they also did was create this incredible and compelling fan trailer.

For anyone still confused and conflicted about going to see this movie, watch this trailer. Then go see the movie.

Tumblr…

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

I’m always a little slow to get on the bandwagon with things. As nearly the last person in the USA to finally have a Facebook account, it shouldn’t be surprising that I hadn’t really heard of tumblr before.

Turns out it’s really twitter, but more. Twitter never really seemed to make sense to me. Facebook already has a ton of inane one sentence updates, why bother with something as limiting as Twitter.

Tumblr on the other hand allows for all sorts of fabulous media, yet like Twitter, encourages brevity.

So I thought I would try Tumblr. Might be shortlived, but it seems fun so far. =D

Take note that I my Tumblr account is about ten hours old at the time of this posting.

WonderCon

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

There is nothing quite as rejuvenating as a fabulously large comic book (and more) convention only thirty minutes from my house. WonderCon is so close I don’t have to fly anywhere, stay in expensive hotels, and curb spending because my carrying capacity on the plane is limited. All the fun without any of the drawbacks. Certainly one of the huge perks of city living, one that I would be remiss in not enjoying to the fullest.
