Heavy Rain Review (PS3)

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Everything I have read about Heavy Rain leads me to the same conclusion – this game is a critic’s wet dream. “Exhausting, exhilarating, and, crucially, involving” (PS Magazine). “Powerful and emotionally engaging narrative” (GameSpot). You get the point. It manages to push all the right “critic” buttons: innovative, graphics driven, and story rich.

The game reminds of me of all those sad depressing artsy movies about special people that somehow manage to win the Oscars time and time again. Those movies that are lauded for their craft, composition, and story; those movies that suck all the fun out of life and that I avoid at all costs.

2009 – Champion!

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Fantasy Football Champion ’09, that’s me!

I ended up drafting first, which might have helped, but then I’m never sure who to draft, thus my draft order is always a bit wonkey. Never the less I got a team that started out a bit slow but ramped up nicely.

The team finished the season middle of the pack and as luck would have it, most of my players actually participated in the final fantasy playoff weeks.

I dedicate this win to Wes Welker ~sniff sniff~ who kept us strong but had to leave us at the end for a serious knee injury.

Thank you team! I couldn’t have done it without you. =)

FaceBook Review

facebook-logo - token female gamer - girl gamerLong have I been a hater of social networking sites. The idea of sharing personal information with the world is completely unappealing. Posting every single detail of ones life, like the need to defecate, or which restaurant is currently being eaten at, is incredibly strange and distasteful to me.

First of all, I don’t really want to know most of that stuff about other people. Second, I am much more interested in living my life then writing about it or reading about someone else living theirs (this is a very similar problem I have with games like The Sims.) And probably most important, I am an intensely private person, sharing is not something I do naturally.

Animal Crossing Review (GameCube, DS, Wii)

Monday, April 20th, 2009

To talk about Animal Crossing: City Folk is to talk about the previous version of the game. All of its incarnations so far have pretty much been the same. Therefore I am going to take this golden opportunity to discuss all three versions. Three reviews in one!

Rock Band 2 Review (PS3)

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Sit up Music industry and listen, for your future has just been redefined, again. Interactive music is by far the most interesting and innovative direction music has taken since the record player. This it the time to get involved, help not hinder. Your industry needs this boost of fresh energy that this venue is providing. If handled in an intelligent manner it could be quite a boon.

Rock Band developers meet iTunes. This is a match made in heaven and would blow the socks off of everyone on the planet. Please make it happen.

Another thing, could you please have more song expansions that focus on different genres? I have so many friends that would kill for a best of 80s or best of 90s. Throw us ladies a bone please.

The Beatles expansion is a good start. =)

wii fit finally found, held high - girl gamer - token female gamer

This rare find had eluded us, until we unexpectedly sighted it in the boondocks. Clearly we needed travel to the edge of civilization to catch this elusive prize.

But now we finally have it in our greedy little paws and we shan’t let go. No indeed we would rather stomp around on top of it then release it back into the wild.

Too many future hours of underwear hula hoop!

Animal Crossing – now with friends!

The big sell on this new Wii version is the ability to go visit other towns. For the longest time we couldn’t seem to connect to anyone, nor could anyone visit us.

I like to blame it on not having any friends, but really I don’t know why we suddenly can connect.

Here are some suggestions we got from reading the forums over at Nintendo Techforums. These are listed in no particular order and are intended to help with the not being able to see or enter your friends towns or vice versa.

-Turn off all other computers that might interfere with the internet connection in anyway.
-Restart your modem.
-Turn off privacey mode on modem, if there is such a setting.
-Test the internet connection on the Wii. The initiated the latest Wii update for us.
-Turn around three times and tap your head counter clockwise. (Okay I just made that up!)

Its hard to tell if it was just luck but we did do all of those things and it worked today. Yaay.

But we still need more friends, so here is my info. Add me as a friend and email me (tfg@tokenfemalegamer.com) or comment with your info and then let the visiting begin! =)

Character Name: Verina
Town Name: Clover
Friend Code: 3265-9547-2194
Fruit: Peaches & Coconuts (and soon Cherries!)

Rockband 2 – finally

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

When it comes to rhythm games I subscribe to the dancing versions and studiously avoid the guitar based ones (not to name names or anything). Since I am such a devotee, many found my abject repulsion of the guitar version to be shocking. I blame it on unapproachable music and controllers, but the core reason is that I am just not drawn in.

Rockband just got lumped in with the rest. The husband wanted it so badly, but I came up with excuse after excuse; we already own a guitar game, where do we put all that stuff that it comes with, its soooo expensive, we don’t have enough people to play with, etc. His desperation manifested itself into an “I want it” dance that looked strangely like the pee pee dance.

I just couldn’t find the love require to purchase it, I mean its so much stuff and so expensive, and and and.

And then we attended a party this evening that revolved mainly around the brand new Rockband 2. I saw those drums in the middle of the floor and every excuse seemed completely meaningless; I wanted nothing more then to thrash all night long. Suddenly I was doing my very own “I want it” dance.

We left the party early and picked it up. Now our living room is full of fake instruments.

Side note here, my husband could have gone out at any time to get himself a copy.

Thanks Sweet-stuff for waiting until I found the love. I know I’m slow sometimes. =)

Civilization 4 & Civ4 – Beyond the Sword Expansion Review (PC)

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Civ 4 Beyond the Sword Main Menu

Originally I thought that this review would just cover the expansion, but it turned out that I couldn’t remember how to play Civ 4. Either I had absolutely forgotten how to play or I had never played it at all.
This completely took me by surprise since the original box had been opened. Maybe I opened it up, way back in 2005 when it came out, just to look at it and revel in its shiny newness, then placed it at the back of my closet and promptly forgot.
Ah well. At least I had the chance to revisit it.
Enjoy!

My Impressions

Starting out with the expansion really felt like one of those nightmares where you show up to school and find out you have a final test for a class you never knew you were supposed to be taking. I really thought I had played Civilization 4 already. The box was opened and looked like it had been used, that must have been me right? /sigh

With two sparkling new icons on my desktop, one for the original Civ 4 and one for the Beyond the Sword Expansion, I immediately dove for the expansion. Side note: I already owned Civ 4, but since I just got a new computer I didn’t have it installed.
