Early presents are the best!

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

This year, instead of just going out and purchasing everything I wanted for myself, I gave my husband a list. Its a short list, I’m trying to keep it simple this year and attempting to stem the flow of excess coming into the house. So what is the list, a Wii U and a Kindle Paperwhite. Two items I would really like, but am happy to wait for.

But then my husband came home today with this:::>

I have no problems with early presents. Besides, I’ve been rather down the past week, which made this a great little perk. Happy happy joy WiiU.

If anyone has any game suggestions let me know!!

Day 23 – Game you think had the best graphics or art style

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is without a doubt the perfect pick for this category. The graphics for this 2d platformer are rendered to look like fabric and yarn, making the cuteness factor simply ridiculous. But the real brilliance of the graphics is that they actively impact the game play.

Kirby himself has been turned into a ball of yarn, which lets him change into various different forms, all super cute. Zippers are opened to reveal things, buttons can be lassoed for swinging, and stitches can be platforms or walls or unraveled. (And really so much more!)

As an avid knitter I love how the yarn and fabric build a wonderfully detailed world and the stitches, buttons and finer details really make it extraordinary. But the incredible functionality of the graphics is quite possibly one of the best graphics to game play interconnectivity I have ever seen.

Now I want to go play it again.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn Review (Wii)

Friday, December 31st, 2010

The Kirby franchise has never really drawn me, nor have the previous Kirby games I played impressed me much. But with all the fabulous reviews that Kirby’s Epic Yarn was pulling in, I admit I was curious.

So I set my expectations low, partially because it is a Kirby game, but mostly because I don’t often agree with the average reviewer. Those favorable reviews have sucked me in before, sucked me in a burned me!!

With low expectations and lots of caution I sat down to play the game and was blown away. I was simply stunned at how fabulous it was – mouth agape shocked!

It’s simple, it’s fun, it’s light, it’s cute, but most importantly it’s the most adorable game ever made.

Tis the Winter Holiday Season

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

Thanksgiving heralds in the winter holidays for me, which is probably why it is my all time favorite meal. Those mashed potatoes and slices of turkey slathered in gravy are merely a gateway to the cozy, snuggle by the fire with hot cacao, bundle up warmly against the chill, tree decorating, cookie making, present giving Winter Holidays.

There is so much too look forward too – good food, lots of cookies, some champagne (okay, lots), presents galore, and every computer game release under the sun.

All the publishers try to capitalize on the random “grandma” sales, which is understandable, LOTS of shopping happen during this season. But for those of us who buy games for themselves, its just a bit overwhelming and costly.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Review (Wii)

Monday, October 18th, 2010

It’s always a pleasant surprise when a sequel manages to exceed its predecessor’s fun value. By retaining the chewy inner nugget of goodness and strengthening the original game’s weak points, Super Mario Galaxy 2 certainly succeeds.

From what I have read it wasn’t actually supposed to be a full-fledged sequel, but more of a continuation – a bit more fun to be had. But I guess the developers were inspired because it ended up as a bit too much more. =)

Super Mario Bros Wii Review (Wii)

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Nostalgia is back in style and the huge success of the newest Super Mario Bros game on the Wii is a true testament to the trend. With over ten million copies sold its clear that plenty of gamers are not only pining for the less graphic intensive games of their childhood, but also appreciate excellent game play.

As a long time Mario fan I truly felt that the soul of the Super Mario games was lost once they switched to 3D. But they are finally back, in original 2D with one of their best titles since Super Mario World.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles – My Life as a Darklord Review (WiiWare)

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Evil never looked so cute. Or maybe cute never tried so hard to be evil. Whatever the case, cute clearly triumphs over evil in this fabulously entertaining tower defense game.

I have long been a fan of playing the dark side of things, especially when presented in a humorous light. Dungeon Keeper 2 hooked me, while Overlord cemented my devotion. FFCC – My Life as a Darklord only reaffirms that humor and evil are made to go together. Throw in some cute and it’s nigh irresistible.

Lego Indiana Jones Review (Wii)

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Star Wars and Indiana Jones are integral parts of my childhood and have helped mold me into the person I am today. Despite the strong early years attachment I have to them, they managed to maintain those awe filled memories with sappy nostalgia instead of shattering them into bitter shards of disbelief. (Must be magic!)

Delving into such a precious license can be daunting, as there is a lot of emotional history attached to it.

Lego Indiana Jones masterfully manages to honor the movies and bring some freshness to the story without squashing any nostalgic memory I have.

Lego Batman Review (Wii)

Monday, July 27th, 2009

One of the main reasons that I started with the Lego Star Wars review was to use it as a baseline. Fundamentally, Lego Batman is the same game. Why rehash all their similarities then?

Animal Crossing Review (GameCube, DS, Wii)

Monday, April 20th, 2009

To talk about Animal Crossing: City Folk is to talk about the previous version of the game. All of its incarnations so far have pretty much been the same. Therefore I am going to take this golden opportunity to discuss all three versions. Three reviews in one!
