10 (Geeky) New Years Resolutions, I would like other people to make happen.

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

January always inspires thoughts of new years resolutions. Whilst contemplating this year’s set of goals, it became apparent to me that my lists are very much the same from year to year, write more, get out more, dance more, play more, same old same old (boring!)

So I scrapped that idea, and thought, well what about a ‘bigger picture’ take on the whole thing. Which of course bogged me down into the realm of world peace, cure cancer, fight depression, and end world hunger. Scrapped that list also. These vital problems are too large and important for a mere January resolution list.

On the verge of abandoning the whole idea, it occurred to me that maybe I should think of this as a wish list. Pick ten really geeky and totally frivolous things I would love to see happen, however unlikely.

And so, with this post, I release my top ten picks into the geekaverse. May they show up on someone’s to do list, preferably someone who can make shit happen.

Words with Friends Geek Fail

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Always a bummer when I can’t play the words I would like to play. Doesn’t keep me from trying.

How not to waste good words

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

One of the most irritating things about Words with Friends is that it doesn’t care about what sorts of words get played. This means that when fabulously awesome words pop up there isn’t much incentive to play them. Point wise its all about placement on the board, not word composition.

But since I don’t care all that much about winning I mostly just get irritated when I get a fun word like “Matrix” and can’t find a single place to play it.

That one just happened recently. But I could not find a single place to play it. Sooooo frustrating! And this is probably the only time I will ever have the chance to play it!

So I glowered at my phone for a few days in a row and then went for a different tactic. I played my left over letters until I found an opening.

It certainly wasn’t a power play, but it was incredibly satisfying to finally play it. =D

Oh yeah!

My highest Words with Friends word yet! 153 points is not too shabby. =)

Played ‘Mistake’ my previous turn and thought myself quite clever as the word nestled right in between two Triple Word bonuses. My fabulous opponent didn’t take advantage, so I had the chance to play Zeps on the Triple Word bonus with the Z landing on a Triple Letter bonus.

Zep, BTW, is the name of a large sandwich, and yes I had to look it  up. =P

Names Matter – some more!

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

This whole name thing has been on my mind a lot. Much can be conveyed in a name; especially in online situations where they are often the first impressions others will have of us.

This is particularly true in a game like World of Warcraft, where the name choice is one of the only character customizations allowed.

Here a name becomes a way to stand out and be unique, a way for people to remember and recognize each other. This name represents us in the game!

Which is why I am surprised when people pick such terrible names. Strangely enough these poorly chosen names still tend to be pretty accurate personality wise, but I would think people would want to put their best foot forward and not necessarily announce their asshole status to the world.

There are of course plenty of inconspicuously named characters that turn out to be dicks and assholes, but why advertise?

4 letters = 99 points!

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

I dont often find a word that hits a triple letter and a triple word this perfectly. Little bit of luck and getting better at aiming for those triple words resulted in ‘jots’ for 99pts. Yes, I’m a little proud. I believe this is the highest total points I have gotten in a single word thus far.

And before you ask, I am indeed still playing Words with Friends (even though I have since deleted the dreaded Hanging with Friends). My devotion to WWF is incomprehensibly strong.

Then again, how can I afford to quit after such a fabulous score? =P

(Big) Boggle Review (Boardgame)

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Title: (Big) Boggle Boardgame

I would have never thought of myself as a word game fan. My Scrabble skills are horrendous at best, even Bananagrams is a challenge, but then it really comes down to my horrible spelling. At least that is what I blame my aversion to word games on. But Boggle changed all that.

Boggle is about creating words out of a fairly large pool of random letters. Short words are encouraged, the more the better. And since there is no need to fit the words on to a board in a specific manner, all that really matters is that it’s a legal word. Yaay!

So I may be a crappy speller, but I certainly can manage a few short words. And even if I did misspell a word, it wouldn’t matter much because there are always plenty more words that I did manage to actually spell correctly.

Names Matter

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

As part of my leveling regiment I have been running dungeons with my little shaman. Dungeons are an incredibly speedy way to gain levels, but they are group activities. Which means dealing with other people.

Mostly the groups have been fabulous. Even convinced some guildies to come run lowbie dungeons with me (great way to complete guild challenges btw).

But then there are those special few, so easy to spot.

Both of these lovely group additions were healers. Thankfully low level dungeons hardly require much skill. Never the less I now have a healer off spec on my shaman. (That comment by Pwnsface really sealed the deal for me.)

Names matter, people!! Character names are basically first impressions.  These guys got cringe worthy reactions and sadly followed it up with cringe worthy results. On the bright side this sort of naming convention is akin to a “please avoid me” forehead tattoo.

Side note:  Shammy made 42. =)

Hanging with Friends Review (iPhone)

Friday, July 8th, 2011

With Zynga’s purchase of the Words with Friends title, it was only a matter of time before the onslaught of ‘with friends’ titles began. I am positive that ‘Hanging with Friends’ is mainly the flagship, the forerunner in the ‘with Friends’ campaign that Zynga will launch on the social and mobile networks. Quantity over quality does seem to be their modus operandi.

But my Words with Friends devotion overshadowed any Zynga concerns and so I tried the new Hanging with Friends.

WWF highlights

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Lots of Words with Friends lately. Somehow a bunch of friends have found on me on the WWF. Or maybe the word has gotten around that I’m an easy win. I blame Facebook. =P

Thought I would share a few highlights.

One sort of strategy that I mostly aim for is trying to garner as many points for as few letters as possible (small words are flat out easier to find). Love the symmetry on the OX play and 54 points for two little letters. Not my move, but worthy of a mention, because really two letter move for 54 points!!!

Some of my favorite shorts have been “wit” for 48 points, ‘jam’ for 45, ‘chef’ for 76, and ‘goes’ for 63. Thats right people, not a single Q or Z to be found. =D
