Web Series Suggestions
Most of my free time is taken up with games, which means I dont have much time left over for watching shows. We do keep up with a few select shows like True Blood (watching season 4 right now), Psyche, Big Bang Theory, Archer, etc. But since we watch them on DVD, we dont really adhere to any schedule and mostly just watch them in one fell swoop.
But with more and more web shows popping up I’m finding new and improved ways to procrastinate (take that facebook!)
So I wanted to share some of the shows that are so good I even remember which days they air. Since I can hardly remember what day of the week it is, this is actually quite impressive.
Here goes:
Most of these are from the very fabulous new Geek and Sundry youTube Channel that Felicia Day and Co started.
The Flog. Solid Felicia Day for about eight minutes. Quite fun and entertaining and super light hearted. Its basically cotton candy for the soul. Guaranteed to make me smile. =)
Table Top. Another Geek and Sundry show which features Will Wheton explaining and playing Boardgames with others (most often celebrities). I dont know what it is about this show but it satisfies some strange boardgame voyeur alter ego that I never knew I had. Frankly its the show I would most like to be a part of.
Sword and Laser. Yes, another Geek and Sundry show. Though this one isn’t as engaging as the previous two, still quite fun to watch. Its the show that discusses Science Fiction and Fantasy books that the book club of the same name reads. Also interviews with authors, and current scifi and fantasy news. The show itself tends to run a bit long for my tastes.
Burning Love . This one is pure comedy. A web series that spoofs shows such as The Bachelor or Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire. Since this is a Ben Stiller production, there are quite a few recognizable faces. Very very funny.
Thats it for now. Any suggestions on other good web series to watch?

The stand out web series for me is Barely Political. Specifically their Superhero Therapy series but The Key of Awesome always has good song parodies as well. I believe they’re the ones who brought the world Obama Girl way back when.
Game Geeks is also a favorite. It is just review upon review upon review of table top RPGs… but it doesn’t need to be anything else.

Thanks for the suggestions!! =D
Just watched the Barely Political Game of Thrones Music parody. Solid.
And Game Geeks is good in a very very nerdy sort of way.

I’ve been enjoying the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, which is a modern vblog version of Pride and Prejudice. First three episodes are a little awkward but I think the characters really settle in after a few episodes. It’s a particular sort of humor, but since I know you like Felicia Day who does a similar awkward/confessional/social commentary thing, I thought I’d suggest it.

So I watched the Lizzy Bennet Diaries a while ago when they first came out, but just didn’t get into them. But just rewatched them and I agree, they get much better. Also I have a hard time getting into the story as the parallels are harder to draw. Its a rather liberal reinterpretation. But still really cute. =)

Yeah I picked it up a while ago and stopped on ep 3 or 4 because it wasn’t really grabbing me. But I love the idea of it so I kept the link and a few nights ago I thought I’d give it another shot. I think what really did it is the larger presence of Jane and Lydia. They are a hoot. Jane is like Emma from Glee, and Lydia is like…Whaaaaattttt! :D (sorry couldn’t resist) Plus if you check out their blog, there are more fun little bits like photos of the actress playing Jane modeling various vintage-y frocks and outfits. She is so pretty and sweet! And some of the comments are amusing as Lizzie and Lydia occasionally comment in character.
My hubby has refused to watch kdramas streaming so I’m just dying for some of the shows out now to come out on DVD. Most particularly Big (with Gong Yoo from Coffee Prince, playing an 18 year old in a 30 year old’s body) and King2Hearts (with the guy from Gumiho and the girl from Secret Garden). I’m also raring to see Arang (with the girl from Gumiho playing a ghost haunting a magistrate in a fantasy-comedy sageuk) and Gakitstal/Bridal Mask (which just sounds really interesting and action-y and has been getting rave reviews on Dramabeans. Also kind of interested in Haueundae Lovers which is a action-comedy with an undercover cop who gets amnesia (what is with Koreans and amnesia?) and thinks that his cover identity as a gangster is his real one.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH STREAMING?!!?!
=(
Sorry you have to wait. I just wish I had more time. I’m still working on City Hunter. /sigh But am loving it so far. Once I got past the first episode it was all gravy.
Am currently watching it on Netflix. Loads of K-dramas to be found there. He might like that a bit better then lap top viewing. Might be worth a try.

Okay the streaming thing is a bummer, but headaches for watching streaming arn’t worth it, even for k-dramas. =(

He seems to be handling the netflix streaming better. It’s not ideal but it doesn’t stutter as much as the dramafever one does. I’m testing it out slowly, we’ll see how it goes.
It’s totally true what he said though, I will watch the same thing and he’ll be squinting and blinking and I can’t see what he’s talking about. We have another friend who also has the same problem. When stuff moves too fast on the screen they can see interlacing ghosts and flickers. It sounds really annoying. It’s not just streaming, the whole movie 3D thing is completely out too. He saw one 3D movie once and never again. He complained about it for hours afterward and refuses to see another one.

Well I would complain loudly too if it gave me headaches. =(
I do get them with 3D movies sometimes and much prefer the original versions. Same with the shaky cam. Ugh that makes me want to barf. Those at least are conscious choices made by the creators as opposed to frame rate ghosts. Glad netflix is a bit better, especially since there are a lot of the k-dramas on there.

Yeah, it’s just a bummer to wait for the new stuff. So much good kdrama coming out this year and last year… augh! Lots of older stuff on Netflix. We’re watching Scent of a Woman right now because I wanted to see if I would like Kim Sun-ah the actress or if I just loved the Samsoon character. I loved her in My Lovely Samsoon but that could have been a one-off. So far so good though! She’s very good at the adorably awkward thing without looking like the hot mess that the girl in Personal Taste was (ugh!!!)
I think next up is My Princess and a few others I can’t recall off the top of my head (the netflix site is down right now). Anything else on there you’d recommend adding to the queue?

I think you guys have way out paced me on k-drama viewing. You already did Coffee Prince and Samsoon, The Palace. All I have left are japanese anime suggestions. =D
I’m looking to you guys to give me the best K-drama selections!

Heh, will do! Glad that you are enjoying City Hunter more, it’s actually a good one to start and stop watching I think because in most of the episodes it’s pretty clear what happened and what needs to happen next. With the exception of a few episodes, there’s a lot of forward momentum. Unlike some kdramas where it feels like they are retreading the same misunderstandings and mistakes over and over and over and over again so if you come in midway it’s easy to lose track of what’s going on (I’m looking at YOU Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance).
In non-subtitled land we started watching Sanctuary, the one with Amanda Tapping from Stargate. Have you seen it? It was a rocky start, the first few episodes were awful. Apparently those were based on the webisodes and most agree they aren’t very good. The next few were okay, with the characters sort of finding their rhythm and the dialog improving. Not all of the episodes have been winners but there’s enough there that we’re going to check out Season 2. I kind of wish the show was about the bad guys, they are just so much more *interesting* than the good guys…

Yeah we tried Sanctuary a while ago but didn’t like it. Maybe we should just skip to season 2. =)
We did recently watch season 4.5 of Eureka and that was GREAT! 4.5 was the best its ever been. So much fun.
Oh and I got the new Miyazaki movie, The Secret World of Arrietty. Looking forward to watching that sometime.
=)

Given how little free time you have, I wouldn’t say Sanctuary is worth it. It’s good enough to use as filler during the summer lull when we don’t have a whole lot of shows building up in our TiVo. But Warehouse 13 and Eureka are WAY better. Even the short lived superhero show Alphas was better.
I have heard that the later seasons of Eureka are really good. I plan to pick it back up again at some point. I really disliked several of the characters in Season 1 and found a few of the major plot threads very irritating so we dropped it after watching most if not all of Season 1. I’ve been told that several of the things I didn’t like are fixed later on and the addition of Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton is a major draw :D

Just skip all the way to season 4.5. Or watch season 3. It was decent, but 4.0 was really disappointing. That’s really the bummer about Eureka, its really inconsistent.
We tried Warehouse 13 and it was just too silly while trying to be serious. Just couldn’t get into it.
