Token Female Gamer

One gamer girl’s review of all things computer, console, and games!

It boggles the mind…

So supposedly Nintendo no longer cares about us core gamers. (Yes I’m a core gamer, sheesh!)

Well all is not as it seems. Lets delve further into the murky system of game news.
Remember that game telephone, where one person wispers something to another and it goes around until the last person comes up with a completely garbled version of the original sentence? It seems to me that the gaming news on the internet has become a distorted version of this game. Let me demonstrate.

Here is my path, very short mind you.

VG Cats -> joystick -> MSNBC

I started out at VG Cats and ended up at MSNBC only using direct links inside the articles. The above links are to the articles I am referring too.

VG Cats Quote:

“Guess who doesn’t see us as a market anymore. Yep. Animal Crossing? That’s it?… Really? The thing is… They did something with Wii that no other console has been able to do. Bring in the mainstream in droves. Now that’s making more money than they ever did with just us. So we’ve just stopped being a priority.”
(in there was a link to the joystick article and the comic about the subject which is quite funny, its #257:Waiting, go check it out!)

Here is the Quote from Joystick:

“That niggling feeling in the back of your head that Nintendo wasn’t talking to you with their E3 press conference? Good news: It wasn’t your imagination! Straight from the mouth of Shigeru Miyamoto, the company says that they’re not using E3 to speak to the core gamer anymore. Yeah, thanks Shiggy, we pieced it together.”

And ultimately the original article on MSNBC (its pretty good and worth a read if you have the time):

“The first that I’d want to clarify is that the concept that Wii intentionally does not cater to core gamers is probably a misconception, and perhaps one that’s almost a PR tactic used by some of the other companies to paint us as a company that’s not targeting core gamers. But in fact, while we may not be focusing on the high-end graphics and technology that core gamers would typically be drawn to, the types of games we create, and continue to create, are certainly games that people who play games would certainly want to continue playing.

I think that there’s probably one other element to it, and that’s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.”

So as you can see it only takes two steps to conclude that although Shigeru Miyamoto is directly quoted saying they are still putting out material that is appealing the core gamer, he really hates us and no longer wants to make anything besides brain games and new Wii fitness versions (okay maybe four since I’m sort of exaggerating there, yaay I get to be a step as well!) =D

The thing that really is amusing is that all these articles are linked to each other. Way to read what you linked to people!

You are clearly a core game customer but I would argue that you are *not* a “core gamer” (neither am i.). This is actually fabulous news because, far as I can tell, the games that are created for and marketed to core games are BORING. The’re basically remaking halo and diablo over and over and over again and for some reason their audience remains happy (ok, fine, the graphics are better but what are good graphics if the game play is essentially a clone of previous experiences). I’d be thrilled to find out that Nintendo is going to (again) go against the grain and start making games that are different and interesting — and if they can make more money doing that (so far they have) then maybe the other game companies will take the hint.

You’re probably right. I don’t play enough War-like First Person Shooters to be a core gamer. No loss there!

Isn’t it sad that Nintendo is basically the only platform left that encourages innovation and diversity? I think with the Wii and the DS, they have some of the best games out there, more fun and interesting then (as you said) the latest Halo or Diablo clone (though I did love Diablo).

Thank you Nintendo for keeping the focus on good game play and not just the next generation of graphics spooge.
