Aion Review (PC)

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Aion seems to be thriving, the servers are at decent concurrency levels, there aren’t overwhelming server problems, and most players seem genuinely happy with the game. China can’t add servers fast enough and North American and European sales have almost reached a million.

Really it appears that the Aion launch (in North America) was not only successful but also quite smooth. Not something very many MMORPGs can boast. (To be fair, it was also not as large of a lunch as some previous games have been, plus they launched in Korea and China before they did here. Clearly that gave them an excellent opportunity to work out some kinks.)

And though I may be finished with Aion, I’m extremely glad I tried it. Much of my playtime was quite enjoyable. It just turned out to not be for me, which is fine. No game can appease everyone’s needs.

So I’m closing out the Aion book with a proper review. =)

Diary of a Female Aion Newbie

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Aion is a newly released MMO where all the characters are angels, not that they call them that, but the world is populated with beings that can fly. From what I have read, flying is the thing to set this MMO apart, flying around the world, and even more importantly, flying combat.

Since at our house we like to try out many of the new MMOs that pop up, we couldn’t miss this one. And since I wanted to share, writing a diary of my daily Aion activities seemed the best option.

gamer girl book cover review - token female gamer - girl gamerGeeky Teen Girl Romance!

As a general rule I tend to pick up anything that involves the words ‘gamer’ and ‘girl’ (or various forms thereof). Those two words have been tough to find in the same paragraph, much less in the same sentence. Clearly the machines that drive capitalism have scented a new market as these words have been showing up together far more often.

Gamer Girl completely capitalizes on the newest trend in geekyness; girls play computer games too! The thing that rankles most about the whole ‘targeted market’ is that the book is merely a standard teen romance novel coated with a layer of geek.

World of Warcraft – The Burning Crusade Review (PC, Mac, Online)

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

The Burning Crusade (BC) expansion was release just a bit over two years after the original World of Warcraft MMORPG went live, and boy was it long overdue. While there is no doubt that WoW was a massive achievement (feat of strength?), it was by no means content rich enough to remain engaging for two years.

It certainly didn’t hold my attention as I took a long break before BC came out. In fact quite a few of my friends took breaks at similar times.

But promises of new and more lured me back for The Burning Crusade. Two new races, a whole new continent, new dungeons, and loads of new loot were just some of the features that this expansion boasted.

World of Warcraft Review (PC, Mac, Online)

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

World of Warcraft has lived up to its name and turned the world of PC gaming into a world of WoW. The most successful MMORPG (massively multiplayer role-playing game) to date, boasting over 11 million subscribers (that’s more then the entire population of Switzerland!) and its showing no signs of slowing down as it nears its five year anniversary.

felicia day avatar the guild image - token female gamer - girl gamer
I’m sure everyone under the sun (or should I say hiding from the sun) has seen this already, but I just couldn’t refrain from posting it. Simply because its AWESOME!

It turned out to be an add campaign for season three of The Guild. As far as advertisement goes, I found this music video to be not only effective but also extremely enjoyable. =)

(Its not that often that I actually enjoy an advertising campaign. In general I find most advertisements to be more of an unwelcome intrusion.)

Besides Felicia Day wrote the lyrics (and sings) and they are hilarious, especially if you have ever played on an MMO.

Talent Stymied no longer!

One of the reasons I havn’t been posting as much is because I have been playing World of Warcraft ALL the time. In fact its cutting into my sleep time. (I know I have a problem!)

Besides taking up extra sleep time, it also eating up all my game time (another reason I haven’t been posting reviews). WoW and other MMORPG are really the scourge that killed the PC market. Why buy other games, or play them for that matter, when you spend all your free time on MMORPG. They are built as huge time sinks.

world of warcraft level 80 warlock sindel - token female gamer girl gamer

My baby warlock finally made it. The challenge was made; my warlock and I rose to the occasion. The bounty was paid (although my husband used it as beer money).

In the end it took me four and a half months to make 36 levels; 12 days 8 hours total played time, much longer than I expected.

Priestess of the Nerds

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

A dear friend and geek pal of mine recently moved away. Like all true hardcore geek friends, we met online. We used to play EverQuest together (back in the day when role-playing was still cool).priestess of the nerds WoW tcg fake card - token female gamer - girl gamer

Eventually it was discovered that we lived in the same general area. Not close enough to hang out all the time, but close enough to play some decent D&D every month or so.

And then he up and moved (and I haven’t played D&D since!!!! Damn j00!) Something about job relocation and buying a house, you know, extremely mature reasons. Of course I am supremely happy for him about all the positive stuff, but I’m sad I lost a geek friend. They are hard to come by, for me anyway, and for him apparently also.

Top Five Online Game Videos

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Since my last top five list revealed the serious lack of quality in game to movie adaptations, I thought I would follow up with some great online material.

While there are a ton of game related videos out on the web, it has been challenging to find the ones of higher quality. All of these were given to me via web word of mouth, aka group emails.

Be warned, some of these are not kid or workplace friendly.
