Resident Evil 5 Review (PS3)

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Now a days I tend to avoid scary games. Yet there was indeed a time when I enjoyed them; enjoy may be the wrong description, it was much more: cringed my way through the experience. Yet clearly some part of it was exciting enough to be entertaining.

Resident Evil (the original) was probably the first horror game I played on the console and boy did it scare the shit out of me. The spooky atmosphere in that vast ancient house, monsters dropping on top of you when you least expect it, and every nerve racking moment when nothing happens but you just can’t help expecting something to jump out at you anyway. Plus I got to kick ass playing a girl, which is always a big plus in my book.

1. A/B 2. C/D/E 3. F/G/H 4. I/J/K 5. L/M/N 6. O/P/Q 7. R/S/T 8. U/V/W 9. X/Y/Z

Definitely harder to find character names out of books I haven’t read, but after some juggling I managed an acceptable list to match. Looking forward to reading them all.
Now that I’m four months into this, I’m finding it easier and easier to finish the books on time. I finished the October list with two days to spare! =)

Reading Challenges

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Even though it might like to disguise this fact, Goodreads.com is still very much a social networking site. Oh it might hide its overall intention with books, but without a community to rate and discuss the books, it would be one very dry site indeed.

I recently joined a group – a far more actively social section of the site. Groups are essentially forums that link into the Goodreads database allowing for easy book linking and displaying. They provide a place to discuss and share about the group topic.

Legos are quite the event at our house. For my husband it’s the hobby of choice, second only to computer games. Put Star Wars and Lego together, you get a veritable orgy of giddy joy.

Most of the lego-gasm results now decorate our house, the easiest (and safest) place to keep them being the top of shelves. Sharing the Lego love seemed like a good follow-up the Lego Star Wars Game Review.

It might be apparent that all of the sets we have are old school Star Wars only. The banning of episode 1-3 runs even to Lego. Although its not something I am going to argue with, since we are seriously running out of display room. In fact my husband has relegated the unfinished (super huge) Millennium Falcon set to the garage, because we have no place to put it.

I’m limiting the pictures to Star Wars sets only (and not even all of them!) Maybe at this winter I can convince my husband to set up the Lego trains.

Yeah we love Legos here!

Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy Review (Xbox 360)

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

The original Lego Star Wars came out over four years ago. It was such a success, loved by critics and fans alike, that it spawned a bevy of similar games based on a variety of Lego licenses.

I never got to play the Original game. Its successors on the other hand, have gotten quite a workout.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen Movie Review (Theatrical)

Monday, June 29th, 2009

transformers 2 revenge of the fallen ticket stub - token female gamer - girl gamerIf the first movie was an aphrodisiac, then this sequel is laughing gas – riding high while laughing all the way.

It’s definitely a solid addition to the franchise and ultimately reminded me more of the TV show then its predecessor. Lot more humor, big action, and Optimus starting and ending the movie with his usual monologue.

Plot wise there are holes the size of Bumblebee, but I attribute those to authenticity and filled in the blanks myself. =)

In fact there quite a few of the plot lines reminded me of the first movie and I am tempted to say they just added material to the first script, but the run time for each movie is the same. I think its more likely that this was a previous version of the first movie script that got a bunch of extras added to it.

Transformers Movie Review (Theatrical)

transformers movie poster autobots logo 2007 - token female gamerThis review is long overdue and is now being rushed out in honor of the sequel (which I hope to go see in the theater soon!) It is also dedicated to my friend Pat, who is horrified by the fact that I love this movie (and will NOT let me forget it!)

I saw this both in the theater and on DVD (which I own and have watched multiple times). The full wall-to-wall screen is by far the more exciting experience, but watching it in the privacy of my own home is vastly more comfortable. =D

Star Trek Movie Review (Theatrical)

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

star trek movie tickets review - token female gamer girl gamerI had to wait until the second (SECOND!) weekend to go see this. Agony, I tell you, complete agony.

So I exaggerate a bit, but I was excited to finally go see it. Especially since the last movie my husband and I went to see together had been Transformers (that’s right, summer 2007!).

It was well worth the wait. I laughed, I cried, but most importantly I left the theater feeling elated.

Lost of people are calling this movie a reboot to the franchise and I will have to agree with them. Although the way they went about it was probably the most typical sci-fi plot device in the movie. Never the less the movie was less about plot (which was a bit weak)and more about the characters and bringing them all together.

Top Five Game Related Movies

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

While Uwe Boll has garnered game to movie adaptations a horrible reputation, there are in fact a few movies about games that have managed to not offend, even entertain.

And though Mr. Boll can be attributed with the most recent epidemic of terrible remakes, the trend was set long before. Super Mario Bros anyone? In a way he is really just carrying on a long-standing tradition.

Actually there are more game related movies then I realized. This is a decent list.  I’m not sure how complete it is, what I can say is that most of the game movies that I have seen are on it.

Some of these movies found their way into my favorite pile and that’s what this is really all about.

I should mention that I chose these movies not for their award worthiness or for their ability to bring about world peace. They managed to sneak into my top five because I enjoyed watching them.  And lets not forget that the genre is sparse on quality, thus expectation is brought down a lot (a LOT).
