Kickstarting all Games

Monday, April 30th, 2012

The Shadowrun Kickstarter recently ended with bonus funding. I am SOOOOO excited for this!! I pledged enough that I get ALL the swag!! The doc wagon card and the USB dog tags and the shirts and a poster. OMG I CANT WAIT! Yaaaay Shadowrun!

Wasteland 2 also managed to garner far more support then was asked for. Makes me wonder if they could actually make a game if they had only gotten the minimum amount.

Anyway its all rosy for both of them and since I was a supporter for both, I look forward to playing the games.. sometime. Year and half or two? I would be surprised if they can deliver faster. (So hard to wait, but must be realistic!) Going to be interesting to see what happens. =D

But my Kickstarting hasn’t waned simply because Shadowrun is a go. There are more projects to support!!

Grim Dawn, an action role playing game using the Titan Quest engine. Its sounding like a mix between Titan Quest and EverQuest. Double quest lovin. Mainly because they are focusing on the open world aspect and the lack of hand holding. This game will not be forgiving, people!

Zombicide is my other currently supported project. It’s a cooperative boardgame that, like the title suggests, is a zombie survival game. I’m not sure if it could be more awesome, but they seem to be managing more and more bonus material, since the pledge drive is currently far exceeding their expectations.

X-men First Class Review (Movie)

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

Finally watched First Class. Took me far longer then I expected, especially since I really liked the original x-men movie. But then the lack of Wolverine was probably hampering my motivation.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I didn’t like this movie all that much. It was fine, but in my opinion, didn’t add anything vital to the X-men movie lore.

First Class follows the rise of Professor X and Magneto; the former born into the lap of luxury while the latter is subjected to Nazi culling. They meet later in life, both in pursuit of a mutual enemy, where they form a tenuous partnership and start recruiting new mutants.

While I have never found Professor X and Magneto to be the most interesting of mutants (plenty powerful though), they shine in comparison to the ‘first class’ of mutants that are recruited. An odder, more useless set of powers I have never seen. The poor lambs almost seem like the X-men version of redshirts.

Shadowrun <3 Kickstarter

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Shadowrun was one of my all time favorite Pen and Paper RPGs. My little group and I spend many sleepless nights creating characters and flinging them at the corporate evilness that is so prevalent in Shadowrun. My very first character was a hacker named Purple. She of course was beyond awesome and probably one of the reasons I loved the movie Hackers so much. =P

So when I saw this Kickstarter pledge drive for a new Shadowrun game I immediately participated. How could I afford not too? I happily support any effort to bring the Shadowrun world back to life. I was one of the few people who kept on buying all those darn books even though I had no one to play with anymore.  (I even tried to get an internship at FASA at one point, but they had gone belly up by then.)

In fact, for the first time I wish I had $10k to pledge. The reward is pretty much the best thing of all time. Also its sold out, which means three other very rich people agree with me. Invite me to the game????

Pledge $10,000 or more
3 Backers SOLD OUT (0 of 3 remaining)
Previous rewards + Mike Mulvihill, who led Shadowrun game development at FASA Corp., will COME TO YOUR TOWN TO RUN A TABLETOP GAME OF SHADOWRUN FOR YOU AND FIVE OF YOUR FRIENDS. (He’ll even buy some snacks.)

Oh well, I will just resign myself to experiencing the awesome goodness that is Shadowrun in PC format. Support, support, support!!

See John Carter

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

All the negative reviews of John Carter have left me a rather disappointed. I view see this movie as an homage to the history of Science Fiction, a genre that is near and dear to my heart.

I could go on, but the point I’m trying to get at, for the purpose of this post, is that some feel the marketing of the movie failed. The folks over at thejohncarterfiles.com discuss this ad nauseum, but what they also did was create this incredible and compelling fan trailer.

For anyone still confused and conflicted about going to see this movie, watch this trailer. Then go see the movie.

Best Rumor of the Week

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Saw this over at io9, there was supposedly an R rated version of Galaxy Quest. REALLY?!??!?! Someone please please please please release a directors cut.

Its supposed to have swearing and sex scenes! Boggles the mind really.

Maybe they released the full version in japan. Tentacles are a more commonly seen movie feature over there. =P

Space BattleShip Yamato Review (Movie)

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

The very first randomly* selected item off of the ‘to watch list’. Space Battleship Yamato turned out to be a fortunate first choice, as I hadn’t seen it yet, plus it was a rather recent purchase of mine, so I was doubly excited to watch it. =)

The movie was actually based on a very popular Japanese anime series that started its run in the early 70s. I am not familiar with this series, was a bit before my time, so I can’t speak to the movie remaining true to the original.

Though there were a few animated movies released in Japan associated with the series, this is the first Live Action version.

I didn’t actually know any of this before watching it. All I really knew was that it looked like a fun Space Sci Fi Action movie. That’s certainly how the trailer sold it.

But like most Japanese movies, it managed to thwart my expectations. There were lots of really decent space battles and good CG, but ultimately I think this movie is really more of a character study. It reminded me of one of those movies that Hollywood actors would do to try for an Oscar.
